Nine Things To Consider When Buying Baby Strollers

Babies have needs of moving around. And moms would readily prefer something that would free their hands of carrying the baby everywhere they go. That's about how the invention of a stroller came to be.

Baby strollers are invented with only one thing in mind - convenience for mothers. Baby stroller is one thing a baby should have, unless of course, the mother and her babysitter is not going to get tired of carrying the baby all the time.

Since baby strollers are established as a necessity, better check out what a good baby stroller should be like. With a lot of brands and makers out there in the market, it would be good to be guided properly as what kind to get. Below is a list of tips on what to look for when buying baby strollers.

1. Consider weight. Baby strollers should be lightweight. Light strollers can be easily brought around. It is easier to use when traveling, going to the mall, or even plain strolling. A good stroller should be more or less 20 pounds.

2. Consider space. The baby stroller has to be compact. It should be easy to put away inside the car trunk. If it can be stashed using one hand, then it is convenient all the more. With a baby around, mothers almost always have only one good hand to use.

3. Consider sturdiness and durability. This is a very important factor. The stroller should be able to support the baby and his sudden movements. If it is not sturdy enough, it is not worth it. The baby stroller should always be able to maintain balance.

4. Consider adaptability. Babies will grow. And they usually grow faster than anticipated. The baby stroller should have features that can support the baby in at least a couple of years to come as he grows. Some features to support this is removable guard bars, adjustable seat recliners, and such.

5. Consider safety. Safety is always important, not only for babies but for everything else. Baby strollers should have features to care for and protect the baby. This includes harness, straps, and bars.

6. Consider room and carrying options. The baby inside the stroller should not be cramped in. Plus, there should be some attachments like baskets and trays for his toys, feeding bottle, food, and other needs.

7. Consider the price. Although everyone will agree that in buying baby strollers, price should not be selected over value. But it is still something to consider. There are a lot of companies that do not hold back on features and still offer merchandise it for less. Be on the look out for these brands.

8. Consider style. Babies are cute, cuddly presents given to parents. That's why they should always look at their best. Even with their strollers. Choose the stroller with styles and designs fitting your baby.

9. Consider add-in features. Manufacturers would always throw in something to give customers a better deal than others. Check out what the baby stroller package contains. Usually, a baby stroller should have a sunshade, a snack tray, a reclining seat, a parent's tray, a storage basket, a big sturdy frame, a cup holder, and a carry strap. Other manufacturers can add in a car seat attachment strap, a stroller storage bag, an adjustable handle, bottle pockets, and parent's gear bags.

Shopping for a baby stroller is fun. Well, everything is fun when it comes to babies. But as parents, it is required of you to select what's good for your babies. And that includes everything from feeding bottles to baby strollers!

Baby Food - Safe Food-Handling Practice

Your baby has a very sensitive digestive tract and is not used to even the smallest amount of bacteria that might be lingering in your household. To protect your baby's health, it is important to handle all food items and food stuff carefully.

Cleanse and Sterilize Feeding Equipment

All feeding equipment such as new spoons, cups, bottles and especially nipples, should be placed in boiling water for 3-5 minutes before use. You should also wash the items carefully, preferably in a high heat dishwasher setting to add additional sterilization. There are also ways to steam sterilize bottle components and other feeding utensils or breast pump parts in the microwave - look for special bags for exactly this purpose. In the case of latex components, such as bottle nipples, read the manufacturer's instructions. It may very well be that you should be replacing those every three to six months to keep them safe for baby.

Keeping Formula Safe

Formula can be stored in an unopened container for long periods of time - look for the expiration date on the container to determine exactly how long. Once the formula is opened, however, ready-to-eat or condensed formula should be kept cold and used within 48 hours. Powdered formula can be opened at kept at room temperature, but be sure to keep the container's lid on when it is not in use.

Always mix formula according to the instructions and measure carefully as estimating amounts can make the formula to thin or too thick. While not especially harmful to baby, thick formula can cause constipation and thin formula might not provide the adequate amounts of nutrition required.

After mixing a bottle, it can only be used for about an hour after baby has started eating. Waiting longer allows bacteria to grow and can be harmful. If the bottle is made and not actually fed to your baby, you can store it covered in the refrigerator for up to forty-eight hours. Do not store a bottle, even in the refrigerator that has been partially drunk.

Breast Milk

If you pump breast milk, it can be stored at room temperature for up to six or eight hours, but four hours is a safe limit as room temperature can vary. Breast milk can be refrigerated for up to eight days, but for the best temperature settings, avoid storing the milk in the door of the fridge which experiences the most temperature fluctuations. Breast milk can be frozen in the top compartment of a refrigerator/freezer for three or four months and can last up to six months in a deep freezer. Again, avoid storing the milk in the freezer door. Once a bottle of breast milk has been started by your baby, it should be discarded in an hour or two.

Solids

When feeding solid foods, you can only use each container for two days once it has been opened. If you "double-dip" meaning you use a spoon in the container and then give it to your baby before returning it to the container, you've introduced bacteria to the food and should not use it for more than an hour. Throwing away every container you open after just an hour can be extremely wasteful, especially with younger babies who are just learning to feed. Prevent this by scooping out food from the container into a small cup and then storing the uncontaminated remainders of the container for a later feeding. You can then feed baby from the cup and not have to waste.

- We used the soothie bottles and nipples with my first child and we enjoyed the fact that the nipples are wide. When we had our second baby I searched all the local stores for packs of just the nipples to buy since we already had the bottles. It's very nice to find these on Amazon and be able to reuse the bottles. Thanks.

Choosing the Right Sippy Cup For Your Baby

Introducing your baby to a sippy cup is one of the first steps in the weaning process whether they're weaning from the breast or bottle. Many parents offer baby a sippy cup for the first time when they're about 5 or 6 months old. It takes awhile for baby to get used to drinking out of it so it's a good idea to start long before it's time for them to be completely weaned.

Unfortunately, some babies refuse to drink out of sippy cups. In most cases, there is only one type of cup they will drink out of and it takes a lot of trial and error to find that exact one. Every baby is different so the sippy cup your friend's baby drinks out of might not be the right choice for your own.

I was lucky and didn't have to waste my life savings trying every single sippy cup that was ever made, but I did go through my fair share of them before I discovered the one that my babies would accept.

Each sippy cup differs from the next. Some have handles, some don't. Some have hard plastic tops, some are shaped and feel similar to the breast. Interestingly enough, both my children chose the one with a hard plastic spout.

There's also been a lot of talk about Bisphenol A (BPA) and how this type of plastic chemical is bad for us and our babies. Even small doses of BPA can have a negative impact on our health. Many consumer products contain BPA so it can be very worrisome for parents.

Thankfully, more and more companies are now making bottles and sippy cups that are BPA free which helps ease our minds (and our health) a little. Canada has already placed a ban on baby bottles containing BPA and more and more states in the US are following suit.

So when you're choosing a sippy cup for your little one, remember to keep these factors in mind:

  • Is it BPA-free?

  • Does my baby prefer a soft or hard spout?

  • Is it easy for my baby to hold on their own?

  • Does it clean easily?

  • Will it need to be replaced frequently?

  • Is it a reasonable price?

  • Is it big enough to hold the right amount of liquid?

Answering these questions before you start buying may help save you the trouble of trying every kind of sippy cup you can get your hands on before finding the right one for your baby.

Sleeping Baby Means Restful Family

Getting a baby to sleep through the night is a magical event and worth celebrating once it does occur. Even if it is a fluke thing that only happens once in a blue moon it is joyous for both parents and baby. Having a well rested baby means that the rest of the family is well rested as well. Unless you are a mother like me, who seems to worry as to why my baby isn't waking up. That could be a problem that moms around the world just need to work on for themselves. Many moms are very light sleepers as it is, but a new mom who is a light sleeper suddenly becomes even a lighter sleeper. Hearing every creek or feather drop in the house can be frustrating to moms who just need a good night sleep. So getting back to the real topic at hand, how does a mom and dad get their baby to sleep in their own crib at a very young age, and sleep through the night?

The key with getting a baby to sleep through the night, on their own, in their own crib, at a young age, is very challenging. Many times a baby will fall asleep when being nursed or bottle fed, which makes it difficult to transfer the baby from a parents warm cozy arms, to a cold unwanted mattress. Doctors will tell you that putting a baby in their own crib awake is the simple solution but really, is it really that easy? You are bound to have lots of tears, between you and baby. I have had the experience several times of letting my baby cry, only to go to their rescue and save the day by holding and rocking back to sleep. Once baby is asleep in your arms, once again you are at the risk of waking the sleeping beauty when transferring baby to crib. So the real question, when is tough love the answer to just let your baby cry it out?

Many doctors and parents will tell you that it is important for baby to self soothe. It is really important that you are not doing all the soothing for baby. Of course you always must keep in mind the age of your child. A very new infant needs to be rescued, cuddled, and soothed in the first several weeks of life. They need to know Mommy or Daddy will be there for them. Once baby is about four months old it is time to start letting go and letting baby cry it out. Keep in mind, baby must be well fed, burped, and wearing a dry diaper. Once you have ruled out all reasons why a baby might be crying, it is time to let baby cry themselves to sleep. Many times, baby might be tired and needs a good night sleep or nap to feel better. Regardless of nap time or bedtime the same rule applies, let baby cry.

Granted there are a few tricks and tips to keep in mind. You don't want to stick baby in bed and walk away for the night. Many parents will try the timing method. Start with what number of minutes you can stand to listen to the cries. You might wait for one to three minutes the first time before you check on baby. After you cuddle, pat, or calm baby, it is time to leave again. This will be very hard to walk away, but putting baby back in bed and walking out is the best method. This time wait a little longer.

Waiting five minutes and repeat the process, adding longer periods of time each check. Baby will eventually get worn out and fall asleep. It could take 30-90 minutes of crying, checking the clock, and checking on baby before your child will go to sleep. Don't let baby win. Stick to your guns. You are the parent. Get ear plugs, call a friend on the phone, blow dry your hair, but do something to occupy the time. Sitting by the door and listening to the cries can be horrible for new moms and dads. It really will only take a few nights of this process, before baby realizes, it's time for bed, and you mean it.

It holds the hair alright. Make it easy to untangle my little one's long hair. It shapes his hair in to nice little curls. This is not an bad product and very well worth the price too. I brought the Amazon 6 pack, and after more than 4 months I have not finish even few inches of the first bottle. I don't know what I'm going to do with all these bottles . Breast Milk Storage Bottle Can Help Store the Mother's Milk Safely

Breast feeding is one of the most important activities as far as an infant is concerned. This is so because the breast milk has a lot of proteins and antibodies that are very crucial for the infant. The milk helps him develop an immunity of his own.

Things to be kept in mind while storing breast milk

- The breast milk should be always stored in breast milk storage bottles that have sealable tops.
- Before the milk is poured into the bottles, it should be ensured that the bottles are properly sterilized and cleansed.
- The breast milk should be stored in small amounts and as per the requirements of the infant so that no milk is wasted.
- The milk should not be kept for more than 6 hours in room temperature, more than 6 days in the refrigerator and 6 months in the standard freezers.

Breast milk storage containers and bottles

Breast milk can be effectively stored in the bottles, which fit directly on the breast pump that you are using. After you pump your breasts you are just required to take out the pumping tubes, cover them with the bottle lids, label the poured milk and then put the bottle safely in the fridge. Many of the breast-pump carrying-cases come with built in cooler like compartments. They can be used for the purpose of storing the ice packs or the recently pumped milk bottles. If used optimally and properly, these cool the pumped milk till you come home and store it in the freezer or the refrigerator.

While selecting the breast milk storage bottles

When you go to the market you will find a plethora of breast milk storage bottles. The biggest question is how to select the bottle that will serve the best function. Bottles made from glass, stainless steel and/or plastic are easily available in the market.

The most important thing that you should keep in mind when selecting breast milk storage bottles is that how long you plan to store the milk. One of the milk storage options, the storage bags are especially meant for freezing. If you are looking forward to buy those bottle liners, which are disposable, then they may need additional protection for preventing leakage and possible contamination. If you would want to freeze the milk in harder containers, then it is best to opt for glass bottles and storage containers. This is so because they are least absorbent and thus provide the maximum protection. They allow the milk to expand when frozen.

Plastic containers versus glass containers

Ample researches have been conducted to find out which of the breast milk storage bottles are best - the glass ones or the plastic ones. Most of the studies claim that the glass bottles should be the first choice as they are better for the purpose of storing milk as they provide utmost protection from any plausible contamination. The second choice should be the hard plastic and the third should be the cloudy hard plastic.

Baby Teething - Symptoms and Management

Teething can be divided into two phases:
- The First: the eruption of the deciduous teeth (milk teeth).
- The Second: the eruption of the permanent teeth.

The eruption of the deciduous teeth:
- Usually, deciduous teeth eruption begins at the age of six months and continues until the end of the second year of life.
- New teeth erupt continuously during this period.
- The first two teeth to erupt is the lower anterior teeth, and these teeth does not usually cause any inconvenience for the child during their eruption. The next teeth to erupt are the anterior teeth in the upper jaw.
- Deciduous molars eruption causes suffering to a child in most cases.
- The eruption of the deciduous teeth (20 teeth) is completed when the child reaches the second year of age.
- The normal teething differs from child to another, some children are born with a tooth or two, and others do not start teething before the end of their first year.
- The deciduous teeth fall out between six and twelve years of age.

The eruption of the permanent teeth:
- Permanent teeth begin to erupt as soon as the deciduous teeth fall out.
- Sometimes, permanent teeth erupt before the deciduous teeth fall out, in this case the dentist will remove the deciduous tooth so the permanent tooth can take its place.
- The complete number of permanent teeth is 32 teeth.

It is advised to:
- Clean the new baby teeth by a finger covered with a clean cloth or a towel. You can use a small and soft toothbrush after the completion of the eruption of the front incisors.
- Visit the dentist regularly starting from the third year of age.
- Explain the process of milk teeth replacement for the child so he would know what to expect when they begin to fall out and the permanent teeth start to erupt.

Symptoms of teething:
- Swelling and redness of the gums.
- Some of the children suffer from pain in the site of the erupting tooth while other children do not feel any pain.
- The child might become nervous, irritable and cry a lot.
- Increased secretion of saliva.
- The desire to chew and bite, like biting the fingers.
- Sleep problems.
- It is wrong to link other symptoms of illnesses to the child teething, for example, teething does not cause fever, diarrhea, vomiting or pain in the ear.

To relive teething pain:
- Massage gums gently by the tip of the finger, you can also use a soothing and analgesic gel (depending on the physician instructions)
- Give the child a clean teething ring to bite on it after putting it in the refrigerator or freezer for a period of time.
- Give the child a carrot or an apple to bite on them, but watch the child carefully so he would not swallow it.
- Some children need to use paracetamol syrup to relieve the pain caused by teething.

The Dangers of Giving Your Baby Cereal in a Bottle

Many parents have been adding cereal to their babies bottles with the hopes that baby will sleep better through the night or because they feel the baby is not getting enough to eat.

If you've heard the statements, "Add cereal to your babies bottle and he'll sleep for 5 hours" or "If your baby constantly wants to nurse or seems hungry, add cereal to the bottle," know that those are myths and not facts.

Your baby gets enough nutrition from breast milk or formula for the first 6 months of life. In fact, many medical experts agree that introducing cereal before 4 months of age can cause food allergies. Additionally, adding cereal to your babies bottle is a bad idea. Period.

Experts like Dr. Alan Greene, M.D. believe that the sucking and swallowing actions are not fully coordinated in some children, which can lead to pulmonary problems because they can inhale small amounts of rice cereal in their lungs.

What other dangers are there with adding cereal to a babies bottle? For one thing, your child could very well be on the road to obesity. The extra calories in the cereal itself is enough to teach your child to overeat. When your child is at least 4 months of age, it is more suitable to introduce cereal by feeding your baby with a spoon. Not only does this teach them to learn to eat from a spoon, but it also allows them to rest in between and it helps the baby learn the proper way to eat.

Well, what about your mother, and your grandmother, and your sister, and all those people who swear that adding cereal to a babies bottle will help them sleep and stay satisfied longer? Dr. Alan Greene, M.D. states, "I suspect the reason is that kids do fall asleep a bit more quickly, and some babies may even go a bit longer between feedings. There is no scientific evidence, though, to support the claim that cereal in the bottle will help an infant increase total sleep or decrease crying."'

The American Academy of Pediatrics also advises against feeding a baby cereal from a bottle. The only time feeding a baby cereal in a bottle is when your Pediatrician recommends it to help with reflux.

Obesity. Food Allergies. Pulmonary problems. Bad eating habits. Those are all enough reasons to steer away from giving your baby a bottle of cereal. You may be happy you did.

Packing a Waste Free Lunch

Looking for easy ways to pack a waste free lunch for your kid? The good news is that it's never been easier to pack an eco-friendly, healthy school lunch your kids will love.

Why pack a waste free lunch?

Packing a waste free lunchbox lightens your carbon footprint on the planet. While many parents are used to the "convenience" of single-use plastic baggies and containers, all that convenience adds up to a lot of garbage - 90 pounds of it per year, per kid! That garbage then ends up in our oceans and landfills and contributes to more global warming gases, which threaten our children's future.

How to pack a waste free lunch?

1) Choose a lunch box that makes it easy to pack a well balanced school lunch. All children have their own likes and dislikes when it comes to their lunches. One child likes variety and surprises, while another likes the familiarity of that same PB&J sandwich every day. But neither child likes it when their sandwich touches their fruit and gets everything soggy. Choose a lunch container that will allow you to pack variety of foods that stay in their own compartments and don't "touch each other."

2) Choose a stainless steel lunch box. Storing food in stainless steel is a better alternative to plastic, and has been used by other cultures for generations. Questions still exist about the safety of storing food in plastic. Several research studies have found that dangerous chemicals in plastic can leach into food and beverages. PVC and Polystyrene have been known to be dangerous for years, and recently there has been a lot of attention on the dangers of #7 Polycarbonate plastics. This plastic is widely used in clear, rigid sports bottles and some baby bottles, and contains Bisphenol A, a known hormone disruptor that has recently been linked to a wide variety of health disorders, including heart disease, diabetes, obesity, some types of cancer and childhood hyperactivity disorders. With so many proven risks already documented, it's hard not to imagine what supposed "safe" plastic is going to be next! There are so many eco friendly alternatives to plastic baggies, why not skip the potential problems with plastic and pack your food in a non plastic metal lunch box instead?

3) Choose a reusable, insulated lunch bag made out of recycled materials. Gone are the days of needing a brown paper bag to pack your lunch in. Choose a reusable lunch bag, and be sure to confirm that it is lead free and PVC free. You can wash it regularly to keep it clean, and your child can use it for their entire school year.

4) Choose reusable water bottles, preferably stainless steel ones. With so many different stainless steel bottles to choose from, you are sure to find one that will suit your child's needs. There are small bottles for little kids, brightly colored bottles, and bottles with cool designs. Choose stainless steel ones that are BPA free.

5) Choose cloth napkins, and preferably ones that will appeal to kids. Cloth napkins are easy to clean in the washing machine and reuse all year long.

6) Choose reusable cutlery. If your child needs a fork or spoon with their lunch, you can include a reusable stainless steel fork and spoon, as opposed to throw away plastic ones. If your child tends to forget their utensils at school, stock up on some cheap stainless cutlery at the local thrift store - that way you won't risk losing your favorite cutlery.

7) Choose to buy foods in bulk. Using reusable food containers allows you to buy food in bulk, which is cheaper and less wasteful than single use containers. For example, a 1 oz prepackaged bag of cheesy crackers costs 87 cents, but 1 oz of those exact same crackers taken from a 12 oz box costs 43 cents - half as much!

8) Choose organic foods. Organic foods are good for your child's health and for the health of the planet. Some families may feel that they are not able to spend the money to buy everything organic. Here is the Environmental Working Group's list for the top 13 foods that are the MOST important to buy organic, because the conventional versions contain the most pesticide residues. They are (in order) Peaches, Apples, Sweet Bell Peppers, Celery, Nectarines, Strawberries, Cherries, Lettuce, Grapes - Imported, Pears, Spinach, Potatoes and Carrots.

With so many sustainable, environmentally friendly choices to choose from, it's easy to be green and pack a zero waste, eco-friendly lunch box with food your kids will love.

Child Safety - Choosing and Using Child Car Seats

There are different car seats for each stage of your child's development and weight. You should read packaging carefully and ensure that your child car seat is installed properly to manufacturer specifications before you take your child on a trip short or long.

The proper use of car seats reduces the chance of your child being hurt or killed in a collision. Children up to 13 years of age should ride in the back of your car, it lessens their chance of injury.

Newborns and infants need to be in a rear facing infant safety seat. The seat should be rear facing and resting at a 45 degree angle. When a seatbelt or safety strap is routed through the car seat, there should be no more than 1 inch of movement. If necessary, you can use a rolled up towel to ensure the proper angle of the infant safety seat. You shouldn't be able to put more than one finger in between the harness straps in the area of your child's collarbone. The chest clip needs to be flat against the chest at armpit level. When your child is over 20 pounds, they are read for the next stage of car seat.

Once your child is at least 20 pounds, they can start using a forward facing child safety seat. If there is a tether strap, make sure you anchor it properly according to manufacturer specifications. This will prevent the seat from moving forward too much in the case of a collision. The shoulder straps of the car seat should be at your child's shoulder level and snug so that you can only fit one finger width in between the strap and your child's body. A lap and shoulder belt combination must be used with a booster seat. It is important that your child's head is supported by the top of the booster seat and the should strap must be positioned across your child's shoulder and the middle of the chest.

Always use the correct child safety seat for your child's height and weight and follow the manufacturer's instructions for the correct installation and usage.

Be very wary of purchasing a pre owned child safety seat. There is an expiry date on car seats - about 7 - 10 years because the plastic used to manufacture the car seat has a life span. Once it has been exposed to a certain amount of sunlight, it starts to breakdown and can weaken. You don't want your seat failing if you have a collision.
