6. It Can Alter the Quality of Breastfeeding. Babies get used to the delivery system of bottles which is fast and furious. They may become fussy because the breasts deliver smaller amounts of a less dense milk.

7. It Can Cause Premature Weaning. The more the bottle and formula feedings are part of the mix, the sooner the baby will wean. The breasts will not have their milk production optimized. Weaning will become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Be mindful that most will say they are, but the proof is not in what they say, but rather what they do. Seek out help in the hospital, but realize that time constraints and shorter hospital stays lend themselves to formula being offered "just in case". Be suspicious of anyone be it a nurse, doctor or lactation consultant who pushes formula too readily. A little extra breastmilk should always be offered before unlimited amounts of formula.

The emphasis should always be on making direct breastfeeding be fully optimized. Mothers practicing "Conscious Breastfeeding" ensure that their baby is latched-on deeply and feeding well. Focusing on a great latch, they leave nothing to chance. This reduces the likelihood of needing supplementation as the baby will get a steady and increasing amount of milk over time.

both my twins love these, they are perfect for nursing babies, mine splutter even with the slow flow ones that come with the evenflow nursers, and while they do ok with the Avent #1 and now Avent #2, they both prefer these nipples. It does take them 10 to 15 min to drink up 4 - 7 oz same as at the breast. The evenflo glass bottles are bpa free, and safe to pump into, and these nipples work great with them for breast fed babies of all ages. My newborn is a very aggressive "sucker", and would gulp her bottles down as quickly as she could, choking and coughing so frequently that it made ME anxious every time I had to feed her. These nipples were supposedly better than the regular nipples that came with the Evenflo glass bottles, but I personally did not like them (saw NO difference in function between this and regular nipples). IF YOU HAVE AN AGGRESSIVE EATER WHO THEN SUFFERS WITH GAS, GET THE BORN FREE BOTTLES AND NIPPLES - YOU (AND YOUR BABY) WILL BE MUCH HAPPIER!

Chinchilla Breeding - Caring For More Than One

These furry adorable creatures are amusing to have and a joy to watch. For some owners, having one is not enough. Here are some tips on what to look out for in keeping more than one pet chinchilla.

If you choose to have other chinchillas of the same gender in one cage, there is a possibility that they may fight with each other. Though social species, often gathering in groups in their natural habitat, they can be territorial and will fight over a preferred space. Since they are also an active bunch, being able to move as much as they can helps in keeping them healthy. Depending on the number of chinchillas you'd like to keep, you may need more than one exercise wheel, and several ramps and ledges for them to leap and run around on. Chinchillas are sensitive to noise and are nocturnal, so having a large enough house (or at least more than one) for them inside the cage to sleep or hide in is important. These helps in making them less agitated. Make sure that the cage is big enough to accommodate all these considerations while still giving your pets enough room to scamper around and leap freely.

Other owners may opt for a mixed tandem, keeping a male and female together in one cage. Chinchillas are just like their hamster and gerbil relatives. They are really active reproductively and can breed anytime in the year. Keeping both genders in one cage will most likely produce an offspring (also termed a 'kit'). When breeding chinchillas, it takes about four months of pregnancy for a female, and the number of kits produced are anywhere between 2 to 6. Be prepared to have even more chinchillas when keeping a male and female mix. Also, keep in mind that to have more females in a male to female ratio is better. Males tend to fight over the attention of a female during mating.

Don't be surprised with the noise your chinchillas can make. Generally active in the evening, your cage will be the source of so much sound at this time. Expect shrill squeaks, teeth chattering, and the sound of them scampering about coming from the cage.

Having more than one chinchilla also means providing more necessities for them. Though their food consists mostly of hay, having treats for them to help train them in doing tricks are always a nice added bonus. Also, to avoid them from crowding while drinking or eating, it would be ideal to have at least two feeding bowls and water bottles. Remember as well that more chinchillas mean more droppings to clean. There are cages that provide a tray for easy changing of bedding. If the cage begins to smell, simply refill the tray with new bedding. Make sure also that the cage is cleaned at least once a month, since these furry creatures are sensitive to bacteria and skin disease. Dust bathing is important for the health of their coats. Even though chinchilla dust can be reused several times, having more chinchillas means changing the dust more often. With more chinchillas, you may need to restock these necessities more than when having a single pet.

Though chinchilla care is more often than not an easy thing to do, having more than one pet needs a little more attention and responsibility. Don't worry, there may be more things to remember and do but they aren't really too difficult if you put your mind to it.

First I have to say that I absolutely love Lamaze toys. I bought Princess Sophie after looking for a Lamaze toy that was a doll rather than an animal. This one is perfect! My four-month-old baby girl loves to look at toys that have eyes and Sophie has big eyes. The crinkly skirt is a favorite feature but by far the best is the ring with beads. I also bought the Emily doll from Lamaze but I didn't like it as much. Emily is much bigger and makes more noise, which to me can be too distracting. I like that Sophie is more petite. Your Colicky Baby - How To Deal With Colic In Infants

Firstly, parents need to be aware that colic is not a disorder and now comes the bad news - there is no treatment for it; you have to simply let nature take its course when dealing with a colicky child as the condition usually fades away after the 4th month of a baby crying this way or at the most, 8 months. Very few colicky infants cry till they are a year old and it can be due to other reasons.

To deal with colic, you must first rule out any other reasons for the baby crying, such as hunger, thirst, tight clothing or being hurt somewhere and look for symptoms of colic as given above. Many babies simply yell their lungs out due to the discomfort of colic in the stomach but others with a severe case of colic may trash about and fidget a lot, which can make parents anxious. However, the important thing for new parents with a colicky infant to do is stay calm so they can identify the signs of colic and then work to calm down the child too.

Doctors are divided in their opinion as to the reason behind colic occurring: some say it is due to an immature digestive tract and muscles that an infant has which is not accustomed to processing food and so causes it pain and severe discomfort, others feel it is due to indiscriminate food intake of allergen-triggering or gas-producing food such as cruciferous veggies by a lactating mother that transfers the bloating and subsequent stomach upset tendency to the infant. Still other medical experts attribute colic to lactose intolerance or intolerance to cow's milk or powder milk, which many bottle-fed babies are raised on that causes colic.

Many a time, colic episodes may occur right after meals and are typical for big, active babies who are hearty eaters; it is easy to spot the symptoms in such infants as they occur at a specific time of day, usually evening.

Colic can be aggravated due to over-feeding and frequent feeding of food stuff that babies may not find easily digestible due to their immature digestive tract and sensitive stomachs; before attending to a crying child with more food, parents must establish whether it is a colic attack. Also, parents with the help of a medical expert need to determine if the baby is allergic to certain kinds of food and then remove these from the infant's diet as well as any milk feeds the baby may be receiving.

Gas producing foods such as coffee, cabbage, beans, onions, broccoli and certain juices that may trigger off colic episodes should be avoided by lactating mothers so the infant does not suffer colic episodes or juices may be diluted with water to reduce their effect.

Anxiety felt by new mothers can transfer itself to the infant and post-partum depression, experienced by many new mothers has been attributed to causing colic too; therefore, parents should work to avoid letting the baby feel any tension and ensure a calm atmosphere around the house.

Passing of bowels that releases gas in the stomach, holding the infant upright, walking with the baby and playing soothing music are sure ways to reduce the colic episode and calm the baby - try them!

How to Properly Sanitize Your Baby's Bottles

When cleaning your baby's bottles, have you ever wondered why you should sterilize them? It's actually really important to properly sterilize your baby's bottles to keep him or her healthy. Most people assume that bottles just bought from the store are clean. They've never been used, why wouldn't they be clean? They actually aren't clean, because during the process of making the bottles and nipples, they are coated in all types of different chemicals. After that, they are packaged by people, sent to stores, and then stocked on the shelves by people. Who knows what these people may have touched before they touched your child's bottle?

Another important reason to sterilize your infant's bottles properly is bacteria. Have you ever forgotten about a bottle in the diaper bag, or had to leave one in there dirty until you got home to wash it? Well, here is something that is going to terrify you. Bacteria can grow in these bottles very easily, due to the milk particles left in the bottle, the warmth inside of the bottle, and the dampness inside. If you just give these bottles a quick wash before feeding your child, there is a chance that your baby could develop a bacterial infection. Aaaaghhh! All from a bottle? Unfortunately, yes. Here are some tips to help you sterilize your baby's bottles.

Gather all of the bottles you will be sterilizing. Fill a pot about halfway to three fourths full and put it on to boil. Make sure to take apart all the pieces of the bottles, including removing the nipple from the top of the bottle. (Bacteria love it in here!) Wash these bottles in warm, soapy water. Make sure to use a nipple and bottle brush to get all the way in there. After rinsing, your water should be boiling. Make sure you have a pair of tongs or something similar that you can use to remove the bottles when they have been sterilized. Drop two or three bottles and pieces into the boiling water at one time. Allow them to boil for about three to five minutes, and then remove them. You can set them in a strainer or dish drainer to cool, and then dry them with a clean towel or paper towel.

If you're able to wash your baby's bottles directly after you are finished with the feeding, you shouldn't have to sterilize the bottles every time you want to use them. If they have been dirty for a couple of hours, though, it's a good idea to go ahead and sterilize them. Feeding your baby is a bonding experience and a special time. You don't want to be wondering if the bottle you are feeding him or her with is truly clean enough! Following these tips will ensure that your baby's bottles are clean and sterilized, and give you peace of mind!
