Perfect Presents For Those in Their Prime

When it comes to buying gifts for people most holidays and occasions make it pretty easy to know what to get. With Christmas you have a lot of help from shops and advertisers telling you all the bright, shiny new things to buy. Most people already have a fair idea of what they want for their birthdays and Easter, of course, is all about the chocolate! But what about buying gifts for people in their prime? For example who knows what to get as a retirement gift? After all it is not an occasion that comes around annually or often enough to know what sort of things you should get. Well fear not as I have managed to compile a list of what I believe to be perfect gifts for people who are in their prime!!

If the person you are buying for enjoys spending time at home relaxing (perhaps enjoying their recent free time thanks to a retirement?) then why not get them something special to do with their hobbies? If the person you are buying for is very into football how about getting them a personalised football book? You can have the front embossed with their name which will make it all the more special and the inside contains football memorabilia and facts about their favourite team from old headlines and newspaper cuttings to photos and match reports (including boardroom dramas!)

If you want to get them something special that they can keep for a long time there are lots of items that you can have engraved or personalised. For example an engraved half pint pewter tankard is not only something they can keep but it will certainly come in useful!! Champagne or Whisky is a good present choice for any occasion and it can be made even more special by having your very own label on the bottle. You can choose from many different types and have whatever you want written on it. Another lovely item to get engraved is a carriage clock or even a watch (this again is another item that will get a lot of use).

A personalised calendar is a very original gifts idea and as it is used all year round, a constant reminder of yourself! If you want to go for a slightly more light hearted gift (but at the same time very useful) why not get them the brilliant '101 things to do in a shed'. This is a great gift idea as it contains so many different things to keep yourself occupied and busy such as gardening tips, DIY tips, Model making, or fun projects in general. This present will certainly get a lot of use (even if they don't admit it right away!)

Many people who have a lot of free time on their hands find themselves wanting to use that time to find out more about their family history. This can be done with a 'Family History Pack' this pack includes all the necessary information and tools in order to trace your family tree. This is the perfect gift for keeping yourself busy and finding out some fascinating information about your family.

Gardening tools are always a lovely idea as it is a useful item but at the same time something to help enjoy your favourite hobbies. You can buy them in sets or individually and you can even have them personalised to make them individual and special!

If the person you are buying a gift for enjoys cooking why not get them a good cook book or even a cooking journal so that they can come up with their own unique ideas and jot them down as they go along. It could even end up being something that is passed down through generations?

For more personalised gifts ideas why not visit getting personal.co.uk? If the person or people you are buying your gifts for plan on seeing the world and travelling there are so many fantastic gift ideas to choose from. There are many items you can purchase to help them along on their travels such as personalised luggage, passport holders, engraved travel clock and you can even help chronicle them and keep the memories forever with a leather travel journal, travel notes and even a world map to mark the places that they have been.

Once you get started you will find there will be no end of ideas to choose from and you will soon become an expert at buying unique gifts for any occasion!

Thinkbaby Twin Pack Baby Bottles, Orange, 2 Pack, 9 Ounce

Buy Cheap Thinkbaby Twin Pack Baby Bottles, Orange, 2 Pack, 9 Ounce at Amazon.com Order New!

I ordered the twin pack of the 9 oz bottles as my baby was just hitting 6 ozs on some feedings and decided my small (5 oz) Green to Grow (GTG) bottles were now obsolete.

The two most "helpful" reviews of this product appear to be based on an obsolete design. In the version of the product I received there is:
1) A cross-cut nipple design which seems to improve flow
2) A travel cap which stops flow from the nipple when shaking up that formula
3) An instruction leaflet (although, really, how hard is it? Pour milk in bottle. Put nipple and nipple ring on bottle. Insert in baby.)

I understand the prior review negatives, though. A 5 oz version of this bottle I bought at a brick and mortar in Dec. 2008 did not have these improvements, and I had quickly shelved the bottle for the same reasons the prior reviewers had cited.

Cons that may be specific to me:
1) All my prior bottles were regular neck sized; there's no cross-use as these are wide-neck, period. When I bought this along with by GTG regular neck bottles I was too naïve to even to know this was a consideration. And I have no other wide-neck bottles now to advise you if there is there's any mix and match with other manufacturers. You'll just have to figure this out and post your own review.
2) It's difficult to describe, but the new travel cap has a smaller circle at the top of the inside of the cap which needs to align with the nipple. It's a little different from, say, the Medela cap which just relies on pure pressure against the nipple. If you don't get that travel cap on just right, the nipple flops off to the side. This can be bothersome if you're using high-temp water to whip up a bottle of formula for the babe, as the pressure differences aggravate the problem. I did not experience as many coordination challenges with breast pump milk.

Pros:
1) I like the plastic of these better than my Green to Grow bottles, as the GTG bottles clouded heavily with sterilizing in reverse osmosis water, which frankly just gave me the willies. The ThinkBaby bottles have not done this after 3 weeks of use, with sterilization every other day.
2) The bottle itself is more ergonomic and I find it easier to hold.
3) I've had no flow issues, and the babe seems pretty happy with it overall.

My baby still gets gas. I've tried different bottles, formulas, feeding positions, etc., so the miracle promised in this design may or may not be. The only reducer of gas for her seems to be tapping the source. you can get them cheapest on Amazon through this link.

Dangers Of Breastfeeding

It is universally acknowledged that breastfeeding your baby gives her the best start in life. The nutrients and antibodies in the mother's bloodstream are passed onto her child through breastfeeding, thus helping her baby to develop its own natural defences against infection. However there are some dangers and risks of breastfeeding that mothers should be ware of.

Breastfeeding dehydration most often occurs in babies who are born to first time mothers. This is usually brought about because of a difficult delivery or because medication was used before or soon after the baby was born. This can lead to a less vigorous or sleepy baby and thus, inadequate feeding at the breast. In the most severe cases, dehydration can lead to brain damage. However, this is very, very rare and most times this problem is picked up before the mother and child leave hospital. Treatment is simply to give the baby bottles of water or baby formula milk. Encouragement and support is also given to the mother after leaving the hospital and most times breastfeeding improves and the baby flourishes.

Smoking is best avoided when breastfeeding. The birth of a child is an emotional and unsettling time for many mothers, so giving up cigarettes is not always possible for some. Mothers who breastfeed and smoke do pass on some nicotine to their baby. The amount a child absorbs depend on how much a mother smokes and when she smokes. A mother should never smoke in the same room as her baby as the baby will inhale her mother's smoke. Also, it is best to smoke after breastfeeding: smoking before breastfeeding raises the levels of nicotine in the bloodstream and breast milk. Pacthes can be a good substitute, however never use patches and smoke and you are increasing the amount of chemicals that will be passed into your baby's bloodstream.

Drinking of alcohol needn't be a problem for a breastfeeding mother provided the amount consumed is relatively small. Any alcohol found in the mother's bloodstream will be passed onto her child through her breast milk, but if the amount is small, it should do no harm to the baby. Also, if a mother knows she is going to drink alcohol, she can plan ahead and express her milk beforehand. This can then later be given to the baby when the mother knows her bloodstream will still contains traces of alcohol. Just as in adults, too much alcohol intake for a baby can lead to liver and brain damage.

Illegal drug use should be avoided at all times. Not only can illicit drugs lead to major health issues for a baby; it can also lead to a baby being taken away from its mothers and being placed in care.

Mastitis is an inflammation of the breast and is most commonly associated with breastfeeding. About 1 in 5 breastfeeding women will develop mastitis sometime during their babies six months of life. Whilst this condition can be painful for the mother, there is no need to stop breastfeeding. There is no danger of the baby being passed this infection. In fact continuing to nurse may even help the condition to clear up without any medical intervention. A baby may sometimes refuse to feed because the breast milk may taste sour. When this happens, a mother can still feed from her other, unaffected breast or express the milk from the breast with the mastitis.

Thrush is a fungal infection, which begins in the baby's mouth and can spread to the breast, making your nipples feel sore and itchy. Thrush is present in or on everyone's body - it's a normal part of the digestive system and generally bacteria keep it in check. A nursing mother have thrush if she has sore or cracked nipples, have deep, shooting pains after nursing, or have vaginal thrush. Signs to look for in baby is a white coating in the mouth that does not easily wash off. Thrush thrives in warm, moist, sugary environments, which your baby's mouth provides in abundance. If you suspect that either you or your baby have thrush then seek medical advice. But in the meantime, thoroughly was all toys, soothers, breast pumps or anything else that comes into contact with baby's mouth. Wash your nipples - using only plain water - before and after feeding and try to keep them as dry as possible. You can also add lactobacillus acidophilus (available in pill form or in acidophilus yogurt) to your diet to re-colonise your digestive tract with the friendly bacteria that keep thrush in check. If you do have thrush, continue to breastfeed.

Thankfully most mothers do not experience any infections or other complications when they breastfeed their child. Most conditions are easily treatable, the important thing being to be vigilant and to get help sooner rather than later.

How to Make a Braided Spiral Rug

Here we have another wonderful project using strips of fabric. Recycling is so important in today's world. All you need are strips of fabric from old shirts, jeans, bed linens, tablecloths or curtains. You don't need any other special equipment. As you work you can change the colors creating unique effects. You can create subtle color changes or bright and dark contrasts. Try coordinating colors with other color themes in your house.

Materials:

8-10 assorted fabrics of similar weight.
Scissors
Pins
Needle and thread
Safety pin
Backing fabric according to the size of your completed rug,

Basic Method:

1. Cut or tear the fabric strips into 2 inches wide. Now hand stitch the strips end to end with right sides facing. Make 3 long strips each measuring 40 inches.

2. Fasten the ends of 3 strips together with a safety pin. Hook the safety pin over a cup hook which is screwed securely into a flat surface such as a wall in your basement, garage, or studio.

3. Start braiding near the safety pin. Bring the right hand strip over the middle strip and then the left hand strip over the new middle strip. Continue braiding, turning the raw edges under as much as possible until you have about 8 inches of fabric left. Secure the loose ends with a pin. Remove the safety pin from the top and taper the beginning of the braid stitch neatly to conceal raw edges.

4. The tapered point will be the center and now you can start winding the braid around in a spiral. Stitch it together as you go using strong thread. Work with the spiral flat on a table and try not to pull the thread too tight or the rug will pucker; we want a nice flat rug.

5. Every 2 ¾ inch sew through the braid and back again to secure it to the spiral.

6. When you get near the end of the braid add more strips of fabric and braid them. As the rug grows you can change colors.

7. When your rug grows to 28 ½ inches in diameter taper the strips for the last 8 inches. Braid, and then stitch a tapered point as at the beginning. Keep your stitching neat throughout the project.

8. Now place the rug on a backing fabric and cut around the rug shape leaving an extra ¾ inch. Lay the rug face down and pin the backing fabric on the back turning ¾ inch under. Back stitch across the backing fabric, sewing from the centre outwards.

9. Now sew the backing fabric to the edge of the rug using neat stitches.

Lafe's Organic Baby Baby Lotion , Bottle

Buy Cheap Lafe's Organic Baby Baby Lotion , Bottle at Amazon.com Order New!

So happy to have a gentle, non-toxic option to clean my baby (thank you EWG's Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database!). I only wish it smelled better. I understand that a lot of the toxicity in personal care products comes from the fragrances used, but there has to be safe, natural ways to make a product smell decent (citrus oils anyone?). Keys Island Soap does it! So I give this 4 stars because it's a wonderful product, but I'm withholding 1 star until they can make it smell a little less like vomit (sorry, that's what castor oil reminds me of!) and a little more pleasant.

PROS: safe, non-toxic, good for baby / good for the earth
CONS: the smell! you can get them cheapest on Amazon through this link.

Don't Bottle Up That Creativity - Your Own Baby Shower Bottle Invitations

Invitations are some of the most difficult things to perfect when it comes to parties. The biggest thing that some people don't realize when they get invited to parties is how much the kind of invitations used tells about the celebrators. One look at an invitation will tell the potential guests what kind of party they're being invited to, what kind of people are inviting them (social class, creativity, personality traits), and how well-planned that specific party is. So now I guess you won't take that invitation planning lightly, will you?

So how should you go about planning your invitations for the upcoming baby shower you're about to be having? Of course with the perfect invitation. So what can you do with the baby bottle that's definitely going to make an impression on your guests? Why turn them into invitations of course!

First what you have to do is buy several bottles, equal to the amount of guests on your list. And then what you do is take strips of paper with the names of your guests and the party details contained in them. After this, you can roll them up with a ribbon and insert them in the bottles. And when you've done all that, you can get some adhesive paper, where you'll write down the name of the recipient and stick it one the bottle in the best place you can. And voila! You have yourself a very artistic and unique invitation.

Toxic Baby Bottles

The majority of plastic baby bottles marketed to parents of young children has known carcinogens and can leak these toxins over time when washed with harsh dishwashing soap. Recent tests have also shown that BPA can and do migrate from polycarbonate when used in a microwave oven.

Besides baby bottles, a common source of plastic used in food storage can be found in the plastic polycarbonate lining of cans used to store and sell baby food. Another known plastic that can leach unfriendly toxins are based on Polyvinyl chloride or PVC.

Pregnant women should avoid BPA derived polycarbonate bottles and refrain from eating canned foods. The plastic lining in food cans contain polycarbonate. BPA is known to mimic the behavior of DES, an artificial estrogen banned for use by pregnant and nursing mothers.

Since most plastic is made using BPA and the labels do not normally indicate the use of this toxin, it is important look at the bottom of the plastic container or baby bottle and check the SPI code in or around the recycling triangle. It is also important to note that SPI labeling requirements vary between states in the USA.

The first of the SPI codes represents the plastic resin PET or PETA and is represented by the number 1 inside the recycle triangle on the label or bottom of the container. These have no known hazards and are supposedly BPA free. The second SPI code represents the plastic resin HDPE and is represented by the number 2 inside the recycling triangle. HDPE has no known hazards and is used heavily in plastic toys.

The third plastic is called PVC and we know this to be commonly used in PVC pipes, but it can also be found in plastic food wraps, so look for the number three in the recycling triangle. Low Density Polyethylene is commonly known as LDPE and is plastic number 4, there are no known hazards as in BPA derived plastics, one reason why it is used in plastic food packages and soft sport bottles.

Polypropylene is a BPA free plastic and is plastic number 5 or PP in the SPI code. You can find this plastic used in food containers for storing butter and yogurt. Following PP is the plastic used commonly in egg cartons, known as PS, using the SPI code number 6.

With the advent of new resin combinations, the SPI code included the number 7 designated as OTHER to differentiate these plastics from SPI codes 1 - 6. Many plastics were clumped under SPI code 7 including BPA derived polycarbonates and natural non-hazardous plastics.

Need A Newborn Baby Idea?

Someone you love is about to have a baby - what in the world can you get them? It is easy to think that a newborn baby idea is just that - easy. But as more and more products designed for newborns emerge, it is really the most difficult thing in the world. Do you get a practical gift or something the baby will enjoy? Do you focus on the baby's wants or do you go for something the parents can use? There are many choices when it comes to a newborn baby idea; it comes down to choosing what you feel would be perfect.

Newborns are delicate little creatures, from their soft, sensitive skin to their temperaments. One great idea is blankets: a warm, cuddly blanket will make baby happy and will give the parents something they need. The only problem there is that blankets are so common, so depending on your relationship to the parents and what you know about what they have received already, you might want to go with something a little more personalized. Another fantastic newborn baby idea is baby's first teddy bear. A gift like this not only gives the baby something to cuddle and squeeze, but it is also something sentimental. Children love stuffed animals and the first ones they receive usually follow them into toddler-hood and beyond. With a teddy bear, you will be able to let baby know that you bought it for them when they were just a tiny newborn, because you love them.

A mobile for the crib is a thoughtful newborn baby idea, because that will be the present that serenades the baby to sleep during nap times and bedtime. Sleep is extremely important for newborns and a gift like this is both practical and thoughtful. You will be helping to make sure that baby always has restful, peaceful sleep and the sweetest possible dreams.

However if you prefer gifts that are strictly practical - to help out the proud new parents as much as possible - there are a lot of terrific newborn baby ideas you can find. Bottles, bottles, bottles - new parents can never have too many bottles! To give it a personal touch, go for a set of bottles with a cute theme: blue bottles or bottles printed with baseballs for boys; pink ones or bottles printed with hearts for little girls.

The ultimate newborn baby idea is, of course, clothes for baby. Here the possibilities are endless: warm, comfortable sleeper suits to keep baby feeling snug and secure; adorable little sailor suits for newborn boys and tiny, frilly dresses for baby girls; even the more prosaic items like booties and socks will come in handy to every new parent. Even stocking the proud new mommy and daddy up on diapers will be a welcome gift.

The most important factor when coming up with an idea is relatively simple: what is your relationship to the child? Even more important than your relationship to the parents is what you want to become to that baby as he or she grows up. If you are a godparent, the best newborn baby idea is going to be something sentimental. If you want the baby to feel that he or she has a friend in you, something sweet is also best. Relatives can go for the practical things, especially if they are parents themselves and know what it feels like to run out of diapers in the middle of the night. But whatever your relationship to baby and the proud parents, all it takes is a little thought to come up with the perfect gift.

Murmurings of a Busy Modern Mother

My first daughter was born in 2004 when I was 23 years old. Determined to be the quintessential modern mother, I spent the year following her birth getting my real estate license and starting a floral design business with my family. I had this euphoric yet horribly inaccurate vision in my mind of me sitting at a desk at our business working on the computer or making phone calls while my toddler played quietly by herself with toys on the floor beside me. Why didn't someone slap me? I, being an only child with extremely limited babysitting experience under my belt, had horribly underestimated how children require constant and consistent attention. The point is, after trying to be supermom who took her child to work every day for 18 months (and after learning I was pregnant again), I decided I couldn't do it anymore. So, I began my adventure as a stay at home mother, not realizing it would be a journey full of blood, sweat, and tears.

I'll admit it. I was one of those people who would make huge and demeaning assumptions about a woman who was a "stay at home" mom. How hard is that? You stay at YOUR house all day, with YOUR kids, just taking care of them. Awesome! My, what a difference 4 years makes. I'm a tough person. I'm a smart person. I am a meticulous organizer, multi-tasker, time manager, and planner. And although these traits help somewhat in making things run a little smoother, for the most part it matters not.

Before kids, I was that person who enjoyed having control over my surroundings and over my time. I could make my precious to-do lists and follow them, on a time table I liked. I could go to the grocery store on the same day every week. And always get my hair cut every 6 weeks. And always sort the mail every day. And always pay bills on certain days of the month. And always have my toenails perfectly painted. And always have my glass top table perfectly Windex-ed every day. I even had the labels of my canned goods facing the same way. Okay, so I was almost certifiable.

Now, I'm lucky if I get my hair cut every 3 months or so and my glass top table is the greatest nemesis in my life; daily taunting me with its multitude of smudges and fingerprints and caked on pieces of macaroni. Oh, and I can't even that damn to-do list. And one of the most simple luxuries I miss the most? Going to the bathroom by myself with the door closed! Wouldn't want someone to climb on the couch, fall onto the tile floor, and bust their face open while you take that selfish moment to go relieve yourself.

See the thing about being a stay at home mother is that you get zero down time. You are always on. 24/7/365. Think about that for a minute. ALL the time; no sick or personal days. At 3 am when she wets the bed and needs a bath and new sheets. At 6:30 am on Saturday when they're awake and asking for pancakes even though you're hungover because you actually had a sitter the night before and went out. At 6 pm when dinner's boiling over and the phone's ringing and one girl needs a diaper change and the other INSISTS that you help her find her Pooh Bear right now and you have to go pee because you've already been putting it off for 30 minutes. At 8 am when you have to be somewhere at 9 and you're trying to make them breakfast, put your makeup on, find your brush that they thought it would fun to hide from you, pack the diaper bag, find your cell phone (which they also hid), get them dressed and find that elusive "other shoe", and when you finally get everyone and everything into the car you discover your car needs gas and you forgot to brush your teeth. Seriously, I could go on and on, but I will just stop. It's stressing me out to even think about it, and you probably have your own stories that are better anyway.

And I only have 2 kids who are three years apart! Translation, I've never had more than one child in diapers at one time. I met a woman last week who has three kids and they're all one year apart, and I'm pretty sure my face melted into an expression of awe and admiration as if I had just met a war hero. Seriously-how does she do it and still have her hair fixed and toenails painted? Amazing...

Now, I realize how this sounds. I guess through this explosion of emotions, I've made my opinion of motherhood sound pretty horrible. This couldn't be further from the truth. It is absolutely the most difficult, stressful, and life changing experience of my life. But it is also the most rewarding, precious, and heart-warming experience of my life. My toddler can knock off a glass bottle of hot sauce onto the tile and make a that-takes-30-minutes-to-clean-up mess, but then she comes and gives me one of those unsolicited hugs and says "momma" and smiles with her blue eyes shining... and my whole world gets instantly sucked into the vacuum of that moment. And it is a precious reminder that life is really not about to-do lists at all.

I started this blog to be a moment of sanity for busy modern moms. I spent so many days home, crying and overwhelmed, and wishing that I knew I wasn't alone. And hopefully this blog can be a place where women can connect, commiserate, and find some useful tips and resources... all without leaving home. Because god knows... between naptimes, breastfeeding, and laundry, you probably aren't getting out much these days.

Starting Baby on Rice Cereal

There seems to be a lot of debate about the best time to start solids foods. Older schools of thought start giving there babies rice cereal mixed in bottles of formula or breast milk as early as 4 weeks old, while newer schools of thought believe that babies should start solids by 4 months of age.

If babies are introduced to solid foods earlier than 4 months old, not only will the baby's digestive system may not be able to handle it, but there is also a danger of an allergy and even obesity as the child gets older. It is safe to introduce rice cereal at 4 months old. Your baby should be eating more solids by the time he or she is 6 months old because breast milk or formula is inadequate for their needs.

Baby's First Serving of Rice Cereal

1. Your baby's first serving of rice cereal will probably only be about 1 tablespoon at first. Remember that eating food from a spoon is a new experience for your baby.

2. Make the cereal according to the packaged directions for 1 tablespoon of cereal. The consistency should be like yogurt and maybe a little thinner for some babies.

3. Offer more rice cereal each day until your baby is used to eating it from a spoon. Increase the cereal gradually over a few days to two tablespoons.

4. Once your baby has mastered eating from the spoon and is doing well, introduce other cereals such as oatmeal or barley, but be sure to introduce one at a time, waiting at least 4 days before introducing a new one. Studies have shown that babies need to try a new food up to 10 times before they learn to like it.

5. Once your baby has mastered cereals, then you can introduce fruit and vegetable purees! The fun has just begun.

You can mix cereal with breast milk, formula, or water. Breast milk or formula are adds a nutritional boost to the meal and is highly recommended.

An important note: Rice cereal mixed with breast milk turns "soupy" after standing for a while because the enzymes in the breast milk break down the cereal. It's still safe to use.

The contoured design of our feeding nurser makes it easier to hold, both for mother and baby. The removable handle enables a baby to begin holding the nurser at a younger age and is ideal for the older baby that can hold the nurser on their own, but is not quite ready for a cup. The soft sipper spout also aids in the transition from nurser to cup. NURSER: Made from a break-resistant plastic which is BPA free. Can be boiled,; top rack dishwasher safe; microwave safe for warming fluid only. Always warm fluids with cap and nipple removed from nurser. Graduated in both ounces and ml. NIPPLE: The first and only Non-Drip nipple is uniquely designed to prevent drips and spills. With your baby's comfort in mind, an anti-colic feature was designed into the nipple, helping to prevent ingestion of air by baby, which may cause colic. Soft and comfortable for baby's mouth. Available in Boy, Girl or Neutral colors.

Top Eleven Breastfeeding Tips - Part One

Over 70% of American women start breastfeeding their baby in the hospital but only 16% are still nursing a year later. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that babies be breastfed for at least a year, and the World Health Organization recommends two years of nursing.

So what's the problem? Many Moms know the advantages of breastfeeding to Mom and baby, but run into challenges along the way. Here are my top tips to help you make it to that one year mark.

Your breastfeeding relationship may be so satisfying that you decide to go longer!

1) Build a support network

During your pregnancy, attend ongoing breastfeeding classes or La Leche League meetings. (Ask your Doctor or Midwife for suggestions if you aren't aware of any groups in your area, or search online.) Find women who have or are nursing their babies and talk with them. Befriend other nursing Moms.

In our society, it's rare to see women openly nursing their babies and that's one of the reasons that new Moms have challenges. Breastfeeding is an art, not a science, and it helps to have women who have "been there, done that" to support you.

Keep the phone numbers of one or two of these women, and a local LLL leader, with you when you go in to the hospital to have your baby. Not all labor and delivery nurses are knowledgeable about breastfeeding and may actually discourage you. After I had my first, one of the nurses told me not to nurse my baby for more than 5 minutes or "you'll get sore". If I had listened, there is probably no way I would have been able to bring in a milk supply adequate enough for my son's needs.

Make sure your husband understands why breastfeeding is so important to you. Studies show that the attitude of your baby's Father (as well as your own Mom) are one of the most important factors in breastfeeding success. If the going gets tough, it helps if he's on your side!

It's also a good idea to make a list of things Dad can do with baby (other than feed her) so he doesn't feel left out in her care. Examples include:

Taking baby for a walk while Mom takes a nap or bath

Massage baby

Giving baby a bath

"Slinging" (wearing baby in a soft cloth carrier) baby to sleep

Reading stories

Changing diapers and making it a special ritual with tickles, songs, etc- you can be in charge of "input", and him, "output" ;)

Dads have been bonding with their babies without feeding them since the beginning of time. He doesn't need to give baby a bottle (and possibly damage the breastfeeding relationship) to bond with her!

2) Find breastfeeding friendly health care

I cannot overemphasize this! I had to "fire" my first Pediatrician because she was so ignorant of the importance of breastfeeding. If your Pediatrician is only giving lip service to "breast is best", then he is going to recommend formula at every sign of difficulty, when formula is very rarely needed. What IS needed is accurate information and support. Ask around at an LLL meeting or breastfeeding class for recommendations.

Also- be aware that not everyone who calls themselves a breastfeeding counselor has ever actually nursed a baby. They may not even have more knowledge than a couple of hours of instruction in breastfeeding management.

Find an L.C. with the initials IBCLC after her name, or contact a La Leche League leader, who is herself a nursing Mom and is skilled in helping mothers through common breastfeeding challenges.

Developing a relationship with an LLL leader or L.C. means that you won't hesitate to call her when you, for example, need to take medication and want to know if it is compatible with breastfeeding (quick tip: the overwhelming majority of medicines are safe, and if researchers are unaware of the safety, the medicine can often be given in such a way so as to not disrupt breastfeeding needlessly).

3) Limit Artificial Nipples

Using artificial nipples (bottles of breastmilk or formula and pacifiers) reduces the time your baby spends at the breast. Time spent nursing at the breast tells your body how much milk to make, so using artificial nipples can reduce supply.

Some babies get nipple confusion, and some don't, however, studies show that using artificial nipples increases the likelihood that baby will wean before one year. So, wait until breastfeeding is well established and your supply is adequate for baby's needs before introducing artificial nipples, and even then, limit their use.

Using a supplemental bottle can be a Catch 22 because it can lessen the milk supply. Better to increase baby's nursings or time at the breast when baby is going through a growth spurt. Your body will send more milk because of the increased demand.

As a side note, the AAP recently issued a statement saying that pacifiers can reduce SIDS risk. Interestingly, breastfeeding also reduces the risk of SIDS. Perhaps further research will uncover that it is the act of sucking itself that keeps baby stimulated and breathing at night.

4) Appreciate Your Baby's Uniqueness

If you're nursing baby when she wants to and not worrying about schedules, your baby will likely be the size she is supposed to be. Don't be overly concerned if she isn't nursing the same number of times per day as your friend's baby. Babies differ in temperament. Some babies seem to want to be attached all the time.

Others get down to business and don't nurse much for comfort. Some are more dainty with their meals and like to snack, nap, snack, nap. Some babies are roly poly and huge, others, petite and perfect.

Stop worrying so much, enjoy your baby, and offer the breast frequently. Also- don't be obsessed over baby poop. Some babies just don't follow the "perfect" pooping schedule that you read about. Some have a small offering with each diaper change. Others go a few days in between, but watch out when they do go-they typically make up in quantity what they lack in frequency! If baby is gaining well and growing, she's fine.

5) Get Cozy About Nursing In Public

Unless you're going to become a hermit for a year or want to pump bottles (inconvenient and has the disadvantages mentioned above), you need to be comforftable nursing in public.

Despite the horror stories you see people commenting on in the news about Moms being asked to leave public places when nursing, it's highly unlikely to ever happen to you. I've been breastfeeding nonstop for the last 8 years in every place imaginable, and have only ever had one person say something negative. I have, however, gotten lots of positive feedback! Sometimes people will approach and admire your baby and never realize she's nursing, or if they do, express their approval or share that their own babies were breastfed.

Wear nursing shirts, buy a baby sling and practice latching baby on at home in front of a mirror.
