Raising Deer - How to Bottle Feed a Whitetail Deer Fawn

My husband and I received our first Whitetail Fawn when she was a day old. A few weeks before bringing her home we applied through the Department of Natural Resources for our wildlife breeders license. You must obtain this, and the breeder numbers of the buck and doe that the fawn came from. We allowed this fawn to nurse from her mother for a 24 hours to receive some colostrum before bringing her home.

We placed her in a dog carrier for the transport home. The fawns are very scared and docile and are easily handled the first few days. She was kept in the house for her first 3 weeks and then moved to a dog pen outside. Whitetail deer can jump straight up from a very young age. We recommend at least a 4 ft. fence until 12 weeks of age and then a 9-10ft fence from then on.

6 Baby Bottles

Whitetail deer are fed goat milk replacer. This can be found at many feed or farm stores. For feeding, we used a regular baby bottle with a rubber nipple. A long red rubber nipple used to bottle feed goats and lambs may also be purchased. The bag of replacer will tell you how to mix the formula. We would mix a big batch and store it in a container in the refrigerator.

Raising Deer - How to Bottle Feed a Whitetail Deer Fawn

We started our fawn out on a 3 hour feeding schedule. It is very important that these fawns are fed at least 6 times per day for the first few weeks. Start with an ounce of formula. Our fawn just laid around for the first week and didn't get up and move much. For feedings we placed her on a towel and fed her while she was lying down. We had many problems with her feedings. She did not take to the nipple well at all and we ended up using a syringe to force feed her for a few days. After she got the hang of it, she ate like a pro. It is advisable to add 1-2 tablespoons of plain yogurt to each bottle to prevent diarrhea. The diarrhea can be fatal to a fawn and you can lose them very fast. If the diarrhea still persists, talking to a wildlife or exotic veterinarian about medication may be necessary.

The reason most people lose fawns is because they do not know that they must wipe the deer's behind after every feeding to stimulate urination and defecation. It is mandatory that this is done. Fawns cannot use their bodily functions on their own until about 4-6 weeks of age. They can easily become septic and die if the wiping is not done. We placed our fawn in a Rubbermaid tub with newspapers lining the bottom. We used baby wipes to wipe her and did this after every feeding.

At about 12 weeks of age you can wean the fawn from the bottle. We started offering deer pellets and water in a bowl from week 3 on. She began eating solids at about 8 weeks of age. We also feed clover hay, corn and soybeans to supplement her diet. Our bottle feeding schedule is as follows:

Day 1-3 2 ozs every 3 hours (force feeding as necessary)

Day 4-7 4 ozs 6 times a day

Day 8-14 6 ozs 6 times a day

Day 15-21 8 ozs 5 times a day

Day 22-28 8 ozs 5 times a day

Day 29-35 9 ozs 4 times a day

Day 36-42 10 ozs 3 times a day

Day 43-49 10 ozs 3 times a day

Day 50-56 12 ozs 2 times a day

Day 57-63 12 ozs 2 times a day

Day 64-84 16 ozs once a day

Keep in mind that every deer is different and adjustments may need to be made. The main problem with bottle feeding the overfeeding of the fawns. All deer farmer's do things differently, we have found this system to be what works for us.

Top Five Baby Shower Game Ideas

If you have been asked to host a baby shower, part of the occasion would involve playing games. Along with cake, drinks, and beautiful baby decorations, you want the guests to be entertained. Therefore, you will need to choose the right games, based on the type of shower being given, the age and lifestyle of the guests, and even preference of the mom and dad-to-be. To help get you started, we have provided the top five baby shower game ideas to consider.

Game One

6 Baby Bottles

"Don't say baby" is a fun game to play and somewhat challenging. Obviously, the focus of the baby shower if the birth of the baby so not saying the word "baby" is hard. For this game, every person would be provided with a clothespin upon arrival. Then, have the guests, clip on the clothespin somewhere visible. The goal of the game is to avoid saying the word "baby". If a guest hears someone say it, they take that person's clothespin, adding it onto their own clothing item. At the end of the game, the guest with the most clothespins would win.

Top Five Baby Shower Game Ideas

Now, if you want something smaller, you can always use safety pins that have miniature candy pacifiers, or pink or blue ribbon attached. For this, simply provide each guest with a ribbon to hang around the neck onto which the safety pins would be added. Once the game is over at the end of the baby shower, offer a small prize.

Game Two

The Price is Right is another fun baby shower game. For this, simply purchase about 10 small baby items such as booties, Vaseline, hair bow, pacifier, and so on. Keep the receipt for each item so you will know the price. Then pass the items around the room on a platter, allowing the guests to write down the name of each item on a piece of paper. Next to the name, guests would put down the price they believe you paid. The one guest coming closest to the right price and for the most amount of items without going over wins.

Game Three

The Photo Game is a tremendous amount of fun. Each guest would bring a photo of themselves as a baby. These photos would be hung up on poster board for other guests to look at. Then, each guest would try to match the photo to the guest. Again, the guest making the most right guesses would win a small prize.

Game Four

The Baby Food game is something you do not want to miss. Purchase about eight jars of baby food, removing the lids and labels. Guests would need to sample each jar, trying to guess the exact food. The guest with the highest number of right answer wins.

Game Five

For guests with a competitive nature, the Baby Bottle Drink Off is hilarious! For this, fill the smallest size baby bottles you can find with grape or apple juice. Make sure the hole in each bottle is enlarged but the same. Then, line competitors up and on the signal, have them guzzle the contents of the bottle. The guest that finishes the juice first would win some type of prize.

Breast & Bottle Feeding

The first principle you need to remember with Breast & bottle feeding is to 'feed the baby' it would be simple if breast feeding was for everybody and every baby. However, this is not the case some babies do not take to the breast for a whole host of reasons - usually nothing to do with the mother's breast or the milk on offer. You should not put pressure on yourself or allow anyone else to pressure you, if it is not for you or not for your baby bottle feeding will work just as well.

Baby's growth is more rapid during the first six months than at any other time in its life, many babies doubling their birth weight in around four months and tripling it by around one year. Until around four months all the nutrients needed come in the form of milk, after this time solids will need to be introduced.
You will find a host of feeding information and advise from your local N.C.T. group whose members have a wealth of experience on helping with breast or bottle feeding issues, it would be a good idea to look up the number before baby is born. It is also a great way to come into contact with other new mums and some who have lived and survived the experience of being a 'new mum'.
Nutrients & Essentials Required by Baby

6 Baby Bottles

Calories
The amount of calories needed to perform all bodily functions are about two and a half times that of an adult, during the first six months around fifty calories per pound of body weight are needed.

Breast & Bottle Feeding

Protein For Growth
Most of the protein that is taken in by the baby is used for growth, and the requirements are correspondingly higher than at any other time of life, milk as long as it's given in adequate amounts provides all the protein a newborn infant needs.

Essential Vitamins for Baby
Breast milk contains all the vitamins baby needs with the exception of vitamin D, the main source for this would be from the sun stimulating the skin to manufacture it. Formula milk is complete in all vitamins required.

Minerals
Babies will get all the calcium, phosphorous and magnesium that they require from breast milk or formula, they are born with around a four-month supply of iron after this the introduction of solids will provide this for your child.

Trace Elements
Your baby will require traces of certain minerals like zinc, copper and fluoride you will find the first two present in both breast milk and formula, fluoride you may find is added to your water, otherwise your health visitor will advise if it is needed as a supplement.

Fatty Acids
The body needs minute traces of fatty acids for growth and repair, both breast milk and formula contain around the same amount. Although the way they are absorbed by the body differs from bottle to breast.

Energy Boosting Carbohydrates
These are major energy providers and are provided equally well by both breast and formula milk.

Organic Baby Products - They Are Good For Your Baby

In 2005 my wife Melanie gave birth to our beautiful twins Jack and Lilly. Like most parents we wanted to do all we could to insure our kids would grow up as healthy as possible. This led us to start researching organic baby products. These are products made with all natural materials. They are free of dangerous and potentially dangerous chemicals found in most other baby and children's products. Some of the organic products we have used are listed below:

1) Clothes, blankets, and towels made with organic cotton or Bamboo.

2) Toys made of wood that are either painted with a natural dye or not painted at all.

3) Plush organic cotton toys.

4) Baby lotion free of toxic chemicals such as Phthalates, which may cause developmental problems, and irritate a baby's skin.

5) BPA (bisphenol A) free baby bottles.

6) Shampoo free of any toxic chemicals.

7) Organic baby food.

8) Natural cotton cloth diapers.

As Melanie and I started finding out about many of the dangers that can be found in conventional baby products, we decided to use natural baby products whenever possible. We were alarmed at some of the things we discovered.

Any product made with non-organic cotton will likely be laced with residual chemicals from the manufacturing process and from the pesticides used to grow the cotton. Clothes, towels, bedding and other products can still contain dangerous levels of these toxic chemicals even after repeated washings.

Conventional baby lotions and shampoos can contain many chemicals that can irritate a baby's skin, cause rashes, and be dangerous for their health. Many of the ingredients in non-organic baby lotions and shampoos have never been tested by the FDA or any other government agency. Some of the dangerous chemicals that may be present are 1,4-dioxane, a known cancer causing agent, and Phthalates that may cause reproductive and developmental problems. The manufacturers are often not required to list all these chemicals on the bottle.

We were shocked to learn that traces of pesticides and other chemicals, used by farmers to grow large crops, are found in most non-organic baby foods that contain fruit or vegetables. The FDA allows this and states safe levels are permissible. We believe the only permissible level is zero. We also found it alarming that cows are usually given antibiotics and growth hormones, traces of which make their way into the milk babies drink. We switched to organic milk to insure that these dangerous chemicals did not make their way into the milk our twins were drinking.

Besides the health benefits of organic baby products there were additional reasons we decided they were the right choice for our twins. Clothes made from organic cotton and bamboo are much softer than conventional cotton and therefore much more comfortable to wear. Our daughter, Lilly, has very sensitive skin. Before we switched to all organic clothing, she was always getting rashes. After switching to all organic clothing her rashes went away and she was much more comfortable. Many people believe that organic toys are better for a child's imagination and therefore learning. These types of toys are simpler than many conventional toys without a lot of the moving parts and noises. This leads to fewer distractions for the baby.

Another reason we decided to use organic products is that they are good for the earth. The chemicals used to grow non-organic crops and manufacture non-organic products eventually find their way into soil, water, and air. These chemicals often kill wildlife and vegetation and poison the water supply. Organic baby products present no such dangers to the earth.

Using organic baby products has given my wife and I peace of mind. We know we are protecting are precious children from the many dangers present in some conventional baby products.

Bottle-feeding Could Make Your Baby Overweight

When a woman is pregnant, the first question out of everyone's lips is, "Are you going to breastfeed?" On the other hand, breastfeeding moms who stay in the game more than six months are subjected to questions like, "You're still breastfeeding? When are you going to stop?"

A recent study conducted at University of Bristol find that bottle-feeding babies could become overweight or obese in their later life. The study conclusions, published in the US journal Paediatrics, show that little children eating formula milk rather than breast milk get more calories and are prone to gain weight.

During the study period, the research group examined and compared feeding habits of 880 babies four mounts ages. One of conclusion was that those babies who were weaned on to solid food after 2-4 months of life, were heavier than expected by the age of five. This situation results in an increased risk of obesity as they become youngs and adults.

Breast milk has incredible health benefits, with nutrients no formula can duplicate. It consists the right proportions of all the elements that are required by young ones for Healthy growth. Mother's milk also contains lactoferrin, that helps babies get the right quantities of iron and protects them from infections. It also contains certain amount of hormones that help babies fight allergies and increase their metabolism leading to proper digestion.

It seems that formula-fed infants are less able to adjust their energy intake than breast-fed infants. Or this situation could be because of parents habit to stop feeding their babies with formula milk when the bottle is empty.

Harmful Chemicals In Baby Care Products - What's Safe?

Have you heard about all the harmful chemicals in everyday baby products?

Children today face increasing obstacles to healthy development, including rising incidence of premature birth; male genital defects; learning, attention and emotional disturbances; early puberty; obesity; and low sperm quality.

A recent report, "Growing Up Toxic" by the Environment California Research and Policy Center, confirmed findings that chemical exposures are the primary cause for increased disabilities and disease. The only good news is that YOU can protect your child from many of these chemicals, armed with knowledge and the commitment to buy smart.

Headlines are screaming about bisphenol A (BPA), a noxious chemical used in many plastic containers including baby bottles, water bottles, sippy cups and other containers used for food and beverages. Much of the recent clamor occurred after publication of a recent study, Baby's Toxic Bottle: Bisphenol A Leaching from Popular Brands of Baby Bottles.

The study, commissioned by Environmental Health groups in the U.S. and Canada, has resulted in calls for bans on BPA, an environmental estrogen, since it is known to leach out of the plastics and has been implicated in development and reproductive health risks.

Dr. David Carpenter, a professor of environmental health sciences at the State University of New York at Albany School of Public Health, said that BPA taken into the body before birth or in early years of life can alter the ratio of sex hormones and affect development.

"It's absolutely obscene to use a substance that can make little boys less masculine and opens the chance that little girls will go on to develop breast cancer," he said at the teleconference.

The BPA studies call for a ban on the use of BPA following action by the State of California to ban the use of phthalates and other known cancer causing ingredients in products designed for children. Phthalates (pronounced thah-lates) are used to make plastic 'soft' and is found in toys, teething rings, some bottles and other play things that children often handle or put into their mouths. The California legislation is leading other states to begin regulation on known carcinogens, hormone disruptors, neurotoxins, but the road to success is rocky and very long.

Early 2008, another study found elevated levels of phthalates found in the urine of babies who'd been recently shampooed, powdered or lotioned with commonly used, commercial baby products. These reports, along with a myriad of other recent studies, are contributing to real concern and outrage on the part of parents across the nation.

When the very products that are designed to encourage good parenting become a threat to good health, it creates worry and distress. It also points to the need for parents to become vigilant consumers who learn to read labels, follow new studies as they are published and begin to demand safe, clean products for their children.

One of the first and most controllable items that a parent can focus on are the skin and body care products they expose their child to each day. And, no, I'm not talking just about the baby care products. I am including all the items adults use to bathe or shower, brush their teeth, plus deodorant, lotion, makeup, nail polish and products that clean / freshen the home. READ the labels on your product containers and remember that the average American comes into contact with over 200 toxic chemicals just getting ready for work in the morning! If you put it on your own body and then pick up your child to quiet their sobs, it's safe to assume your child is getting exposed to the same 200 chemicals that you just slathered over your own body.

So, how do you get started?

Just take one step at a time. READ labels and try to limit the number of toxins in each product. I've listed the most worrisome below - clip the list and take it with you when you are shopping. Remember that if a product has 5 or 6 ingredients that are on the list - or only 1 ingredient on the list, that should be reason enough to look for a safer product.

Red Flag Ingredients (toxic synthetic chemicals) to Avoid:

· Alcohol, Isopropyl (SD-40)

· Benzoyl Peroxide

· DEA (Diethanolamine), MEA (Monoethanolamine), & TEA (Triethanolamine) · Dioxin

· DMDM Hydantoin & Urea (Imidazolidinyl)

· FD&C Color Pigments

· Fragrances

· Parabens

· PEG (Polyethylene glycol)

· Phthalates

· Propylene Glycol (PG) and Butylene Glycol

· Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) and Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES)

· Triclosan

· Sunscreen ingredients like benzophenone, avebenzone, methyoxycinnamates, paba, etc.

I recommend that you take the time to find the best natural, certified organic and/or wild crafted formulations. Look for certifications like: Certified ToxicFree® Product Seal, the EcoCert Seal or the USDA Certified Organic Seal.

These seals are indications that a third party has examined the formulations and judged them according to their safety standards. I believe that you have a 'Right to Know' that what is in products will not harm you or your baby! Feeling assured that the products you purchase are free from xeno-estrogens, carcinogens and other known toxic ingredients is important when you are buying for you and your baby.

Baby Care Tips That You Need to Know

Baby care is actually pleasurable but creates stress too among new parents. When you have a new born baby, it is obvious that you will have a tight time. You have to take proper care for the baby and you need to do your household chores too. You might have already heard a lot of tips for baby care, but you should understand that your baby is unique and you have to find out what works best for your baby.

1. Breastfeeding is very essential for a newborn. If for some reasons, you are not able to feed your baby you can go for bottle feeding. After every feed, you have to burp the baby. This ensures that the baby doesn't get gas since newborns are prone to get gas faster.

2. If your baby is more than a few weeks old and you want to get back to work, you cannot expect your baby to forget about breastfeeding. If you know that you will leave your child with a nurse, you need to make your baby accustomed to bottle feeding much before leaving your baby under the care of a nurse.

3. Many moms feel that bottle feeding prevents them from feeding the baby with breast milk. But this is not true. There are breast pumps and you can use them to store your milk for bottle feeding.

4. When you feed the baby with bottle, be cautious that you don't let the baby sleep with the bottle in his or her mouth, especially, when your baby has developed teeth, this practice will create cavities leading to dental problems.

5. Until your child starts moving and getting dirty, a bath two or three times per week is sufficient. However, you have to give sponge bath every time you change the diaper. Leaving the baby with dirty diapers invites infections and you need to avoid this completely.

6. While you take the baby for bath, keep everything including towel, soap and shampoo ready. Never leave your baby alone in the tub even for a minute. Also when you bathe the baby, close the ears with towel or covers so that water doesn't enter his or her ears.

7. While you take the baby in your arms, keep him or her close to your chest and make him or her feel that he or she is in secure hands. Cuddle your baby often and kiss him or her on his or her hands and toes gently to ensure bonding.

8. Always wash the baby's clothes separately. You can even buy a counter top washing machine for washing only the baby's clothes and diapers.

9. You should never miss immunization vaccines for your baby to avoid problems in the future. Note down the vaccination dates and set an alarm for them in your notepad.

10. Never shake the baby or give him or her sudden shocks to stop him or her from crying. These sudden activities will affect the physical and mental health of the baby.

- we have been using these nipples for about a week and are pleased. we had the purely comfi bottles but our baby (5 months old, using bottles for about 3 months now) was getting frustrated with the slow flow nipples that they came with. he has had no problem adjusting to the change and seems much happier. these nipples look just the same as the slow flow, so you have to hold them up to the light and look for the symbol indicating they are medium flow (or just remove the slow flow nipples from rotation). also annoying was that they come in packs of two while the bottles came in a 3 pack; but it's always good to have a spare nipple on hand, i guess. all in all this product has worked just fine and caused us no problems.

The History of Formula Milk

Despite recent detractors, there can be no doubt that baby milk formula has saved countless lives over the years. The first successful milk formula was produced in the 1860s by Henri Nestle, in Switzerland. It was based on cows' milk and cereals and was the first scientific attempt to imitate breast milk.

It isn't just in modern times that some mothers have difficulty is producing enough breast milk to feed their baby: t has always been a problem and remains so. This inability to produce breast milk is more prevalent in mothers who themselves have poor diets and is a major problem for mothers living in grinding poverty. It was whilst visiting mothers living in poverty and children in orphanages that Henri Nestle first determined to come up with substitute to breast milk. He eventually came up with a concoction he called farine lactee, based, as he put it, on "wholesome Swiss milk and a cereal component baked by a special process of my invention". In 1867, he fed this to a premature baby boy whose mother was dangerously ill herself; the boy survived, and Nestle's reputation skyrocketed. Nestle's major strength wasn't invention, he was an extremely good marketer, and within 5 years he was selling he had offices in London, and was exporting formula to South America and Australia.

Nestle was not the only manufacturer of formula milk. Others included Justus von Liebig, Horlicks and Mellins Foods. The success of formula milk based on sows' milk owes everything to the massive strides in bacteriology made by the like of Louis Pasteur and others who made the handling of milk far safer than it had been before.

The term 'formula' is derived from Thomas Morgan Botch's approach to "percentage feeding." He coined the term when he was trying to devise the best mix of the various constituents that make up baby formula. A common basic formula, at the time, at Infant's Hospital in Boston was 2-6-2, meaning 2% fat, 6% carbohydrate, and 2% protein. During the twentieth century many commercial companies have strived to improv milk formula. Franklin Infant Food introduced, in 1923, was a powdered formulation, later to be called Similac. Enfamil, by Mead Johnson, was a latecomer in 1959, but the company, established in 1905, and pioneered vitamin research in the 1920's with the first cod liver oil of standardized potency in 1924 and pure solution of Vitamin D in 1929.

There has been much controversy with formula milk in recent years. Slick advertising campaigns led to many millions of women feeding their children formula rather than breast milk. Whilst the negative effects in the West have been minimal (if at all any) the same can't be said for mothers in the Third World who bottle-feed their babies. The lack of basic safe, clean water has led to the deaths of millions of children who were fed contaminated formula milk. Despite many campaigns, the practice of dumping milk formula on the developing world appears to be an ongoing problem.

The history of bottle formula milk is not very old and the take up by millions of women all over the world has been staggering. It is also a controversial history and its future seems set to be one of controversy.

Completely Doable Baby List

So you're going to have a baby...

Congratulations!! Once you get through the "Whoa, I'm going to be a mom / dad" to "Can I do this?" to "Okay! I'm ready!" your next thought should be "What do I need?" Some will give you horrifying lists that will cause your head to spin. As a mother of 2 young children I have figured out that you don't need as much as the lists say, and you certainly don't need it all at once. I have broken my list down into age categories: 0-3mos (thing you should have on hand when baby comes home), 3-6mos, and 6-12mos. A word of advice: your baby doesn't care if the onsie she's wearing cost $5 or $50, so save yourself some money and put it towards the important stuff, like college tuition!

0-3 Months
Must haves:

- Place for baby to sleep: crib, bassinette, cardboard box (kidding) etc
- 10 Receiving blankets - for swaddling baby or cleaning off spit up
- 5-10 onsies - good for under layer in winter, or only layer on hot days
- 5-10 sleepers
- Nail clippers & hairbrush
- Baby soap/shampoo
- Washcloths
- Diapers & wipes
- Car Seat
- Bulb Syringe
- Diaper rash cream
- Thermometer
- Bottles/Formula/Breast Pump (depending on your choice)
- Bunting suit for cold days (if needed)

Nice to haves:

- Diaper Bag
- Baby soap
- Other clothes
- Baby Monitor
- Stroller
- Baby Sling
- Play Pen
- Change Table / Dresser
- Rocking Chair
- Baby bathtub
- Toys, etc
- Swing
- Soothers

TIP - Put all this on your gift registry and you won't have to buy very much!

3-6 mos

- More clothes (assuming baby has grown)
- High chair
- Safety items (baby gate, outlet covers, etc)
- Age appropriate toys and books
- Bibs (a lot of bibs)
- Baby spoons
- Baby cereal (ie: Pablum)
- Jolly jumper

6-12 mos

- Yes, more clothes!
- Baby walker
- New carseat (once baby reaches Federal recommended age/weight limit to move to forward-facing seat)
- Even more books & toys!

See? Not so bad once you get through the first list is it? If you start a few months before the baby comes and just buy a few things when you are out an about you will be done in no time.

Thermos Funtainer Bottle, Disney Princess, 12 Ounce Thermos Funtainer Bottle, Disney Princess, 12 Ounce
Description
Disney(r) princess design thermax(r) double wall vacuum insulation for maximum cold temperature retention unbreakable stainless steel interior & exterior hygienic push button lid with pop-up straw keeps contents cold for 12 hours perfect for water or juice

Best Customer Review

- We purchased this Thermos (with the Hello Kitty design from Target) over 1½ years ago. It has held up through almost daily use. It is one of the best kids drink holders I've ever had. We actually have two, one blue one pink.

They each came with an extra straw set but my originals are still going strong.

I can put ice water in it in the morning and send my daughter to camp (outside, no refrigerator) and when she gets home late afternoon, there is still ice in it.

We use them for lunches, travel and daily household use.

Milk stays cold for up to 12 hours (although we don't usually let milk stay out that long).

It has been tossed around (not dropped from any great height) and has rolled around the mini van and the only wear it shows is with the imprint on the outside.

We do not wash it in the dishwasher although I think you can and I take the straw apart each time I wash it - it is a two piece part.

Since we put milk in it, I often clean the straw out with a pipe cleaner so that any residual milk is removed. I use a knife point to go around the inside of the straw connecting point because this can sometimes build up some milk stuff.

It sounds like a lot but it takes less than a minute to wash and I feel like it is clean when we are done.
It reassembles so easily. I've had straw cups that have to be carefully threaded and pushed. This just pops in.

A little pricey for a drinking cup but well worth every penny.

*******************************
UPDATE 9/3/2010
I just purchased another Funtainer (from Amazon) so that we had one at school with cold water and one at home. Coincidentally, my daughter dropped our old one at school and the top broke. It has been dropped many times in the past and it is almost two years old so I feel like it held up well. In defense of the product, she dropped it on a hard floor.
I did want to point out that the one we just received from our Amazon order did not have an extra straw set but seems to be constructed like our older one.

8 Reasons Why You Should Breastfeed Your Baby

So we've all heard that breastfeeding is best. But why is it so? There's more to it than just the high IQ we hear about or the supposed bonding a mother can have with her child. With the numerous advantages of breastfeeding, we've chosen a number of them for moms to learn more about. As always, don't be hesitant to consult your OB-gynecologist or pediatrician for more information. If you really want to breastfeed your baby and you reach a hurdle with your physician, it never hurts to get another opinion.

1. Breast milk is sterile and contains perfectly balanced nutrients. Within a few days after your birth, a bluish and watery fluid is secreted from your breasts. This is called colostrum and is high on protein, vitamins, and minerals. For some mothers, the onset of colostrum varies - others have it before they even give birth and some take a few more days. Colostrum is the "human vaccine" against illnesses and can only be found in breast milk.

2. The bonding that comes from breastfeeding is unsurpassed. Breastfeeding lets the mother and baby interact more fully than bottle-feeding. You can snuggle up close to your baby and encourage eye contact. The skin-to-skin contact from breastfeeding benefits the baby immensely by making him feel safe and secure in mom's arms.

3. Breast milk supplies substances which protect the baby against gastro-intestinal infections, respiratory and viral infections. To a large degree, breast milk also protects babies against allergic disorders especially asthma and eczema.

4. Breast milk is easily digested by babies. Whey, which is the predominant protein found in breast milk is easy to digest unlike casein, the protein in cow's milk.

5. Breastfed babies are less likely to become obese since breast milk is easier to digest. It does not convert in fat more readily as other forms of artificial feeding do.

6. Breastfeeding is more convenient for the mother. Breast milk is readily available anytime, anywhere. It does not require much preparation and much waiting time for the baby.

7. Breastfeeding leads to an alert, attentive and smart child. There have been many studies that share the same beliefs that breast milk benefits the brain development of babies.

8. Best of all, breast milk is free! There is no need for unnecessary gadgets, bottles, sterilizers, etc. In one month alone, a mother can easily spend a fortune in purchases of canned formula.

Because the mom-to-be is expecting multiple babies, she might have a number of distinctive needs for the infants. Having multiple babies may not be double the money, but expect that they will definitely a lot expensive than having only one. By giving twin baby gifts to a mom, you can help ease her burden when it comes to the necessary things she will need for her children. Below are some of the best practical baby gift ideas for twins:

Safely Feeding Babies - 10 Important Tips

Babies usually triple their birth weight the first year. That's why nutritious and safely handled food, served in an age-appropriate way, is so important. Being aware of safe food handling practices and potential feeding dangers are the best ways to protect your family from food illnesses and accidents, while also giving your child a healthy start on development and growth. Here are a few important tips and reminders.

1. Wash Hands. It's important to wash your hands before preparing food or beverages, especially when feeding babies. According to a Penn State University study of mothers with infants less than 4 months old many moms said they routinely forget to wash their hands after changing baby's diaper, and using the bathroom. Not washing hands could result in infant diarrhea from the bacteria transferred while engaging in these activities.

2. Handle Bottles Carefully. Although some babies will drink a bottle straight from the refrigerator, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) advises most babies prefer milk warmed to room temperature. Warm the bottle by holding it under a running hot-water faucet or putting it in a bowl of hot water for a few minutes. Shake well and test milk temperature to make sure it's not too hot before feeding. Microwaves can heat unevenly. Children's mouths and throats can be severely burned by bottles heated in the microwave. Always discard leftover milk in bottle to reduce the growth of harmful bacteria.

3. Cow's Milk. Avoid serving regular cow's milk until infants are 1-year-old. Before then, infants may experience an allergic reaction, stomachache and low blood iron. When you begin serving regular cow's milk, serve whole milk. Do not switch to lower fat milk until the baby's doctor recommends this change usually around age 2.

4. Mixing Cereal and Formula in the Bottle. Do not serve cereal mixed with formula from a bottle. Many think this practice helps babies sleep better through the night, however there is no evidence of this. Plus, there is a possibility of a baby choking.

5. Hold Baby When Bottle-Feeding. Babies who are put to bed with a bottle are more likely to have cavities. This practice also increases the potential of choking.

6. Limit Juice. Serve only 100 percent juice and in small quantities so it doesn't interfere with the infant eating other nutritious foods. AAP recommends giving juice diluted with water only to infants who are approximately 6 months or older and who can drink from a cup. AAP recommends offering no more than a TOTAL of 4 to 6 ounces of juice a day to infants. (Source: American Academy of Pediatrics Committee on Nutrition)

7. Avoid Honey And Corn Syrup. Do not serve infants honey or corn syrup during the first year of life. These foods may contain botulism spores that could cause illness or death in infants.

8. Food Introductions. When introducing new foods, try only one at a time, and start with single-ingredient foods. Avoid serving mixed ingredient foods until each food has been given separately. Begin by serving about 1 to 2 tablespoons and then increase the amount as baby wants more. Wait at least 3 days before trying another new food so you can tell if there are any adverse reactions.

Iron-fortified rice cereal is usually the first food offered, as this is easily digested. It's frequently recommended to continue fortified baby cereal through the first year of life.
Remember your baby will still be receiving the majority of nutrition from breast milk or formula during the first year.

9. Serve Solids Safely. Transfer an amount you feel baby will eat from the baby food jar to a dish. Throw away any food left uneaten in the dish. Avoid feeding directly from the baby food jar. Bacteria from a baby's mouth can grow and multiply in the food before it is served again. Use refrigerated jarred baby foods within 1 to 2 days after opening.

Once opened, do not leave baby food solids or liquids (breast milk or formula) at room temperature for more than 2 hours. Bacteria can grow to harmful levels when food is left out longer than this.

10. Choking Hazards. Avoid serving foods that may choke an infant, such as nuts and seeds, raw carrots and celery, whole kernel corn, raisins, large chunks of meat or cheese, popcorn, chips, pretzels, grapes, whole berries, cherries, unpeeled fruits and vegetables, hard candies, pickles, hot dogs, marshmallows (regular or miniature), and peanut butter. In general, avoid foods that are round and firm, sticky and chewy or cut in large chunks.

As infants grow into toddlers, they can begin eating the foods above, if cut into small pieces. Most pediatricians advise foods should be no larger than 1/4 inch for toddlers and 1/2 inch for preschoolers.

Chemicals in Plastic Bottles Are Emasculating Our Teen Boys

Have you wondered why many teen girls are reaching puberty early these days, and boys late?

Plastics containing synthetic estrogens have been emasculating our boys (and bringing precocious puberty to our girls), along with some other factors, according to family physician and research psychologist Leonard Sax. These plastics are found in bottles holding soda, water, and other beverages.

Five factors contribute to the increasing numbers of underachieving boys and men, according to Sax. One of these is the fact that boys and men are receiving synthetic estrogens as contaminants provided by plastic water and soda bottles, baby bottles, baby toys, and pacifiers. Sax identifies water and soda bottles with a recycling number of 1 as the most prevalent culprits. These items contain BPA and phthalates, synthetic estrogens for softening the plastic.

This is not a surprise. There's been a debate among scientists about how much of these chemicals is harmful. Animal studies pinpointed the amount needed to cause cancer; the industry used that as a benchmark, allowing trace amounts that supposedly aren't enough to cause cancer.

Sax asks the question, how does taking estrogen affect a male? In the past decade or two, many of us have been drinking our water from plastic bottles. In fact, the soda manufacturers switched from aluminum cans to plastic bottles. This makes us part of an enormous experiment evaluating the effect of taking estrogen on males. Sidestepping the question of whether it might cause cancer, Sax says he thinks it makes young males placid, and causes delayed puberty.

Four other factors and the plastics additives are combining to foster a group of men and boys who are not growing up, Sax says. He cites a study that found that, 25 years ago, only 8 percent of men between the ages of 35 and 40 had not ever married. In 2006, in contrast, 22 percent were in that category, and the number was still rising. (NYT, 8/6/06, "Facing Middle Age with No Degree and No Wife" by O'Donnell and Porter)

The proportion of men aged 18-35 living at home with parents or relatives has doubled in the last 30 years. Meanwhile 36 percent of babies in the United States in 2004 were born to unmarried women. These statistics cut across all demographic groups.

Congress, through the Consumer Product Safety Commission, is banning phthalates from products sold for use by children under 12 as of August, 2009. This includes baby bottles and pacifiers.

The agency in charge of food and drink, and its containers, is the FDA, the Food and Drug Administration. In the controversy over BPA, the FDA chooses to believe the 11 industry-funded studies that show BPA is safe. But there are 104 independently funded studies showing it is hazardous, according Catherine Zandonella, MPH, writing in The Green Guide, an online magazine.

Therefore, let the buyer beware. Avoid beverages in plastic bottles (#1, 3, or 7 on the bottom, if you want to check). Especially, avoid allowing the full bottles to get warm, a condition in which the chemical is more likely to leach. In addition, avoid drinking soda from such bottles because the acid will leach the chemical out. And avoid warming food in the microwave in plastic containers.

Sax identifies four other factors contributing to the epidemic of men who aren't growing up:

* Requirements to sit still in kindergarten. Children these days are taught to read in kindergarten, at an age when most boys aren't ready. So they begin to hate school.

* Video games

* ADHD medications

* The lack of cultural traditions emphasizing transition to manhood

Dummies For Babies

As a Midwife and Child Health Nurse who works closely with babies from birth to 5 years old, I have some useful insight into the use of a dummy for babies that I would like to share with you.

o 6 positive reasons for a baby to use a dummy
o 5 ways a baby can be disadvantaged for using a dummy
o What type of dummy to choose

Not all babies take to sucking a dummy but there are certainly babies in the world that benefit from sucking one. These are

1. Babies who are 3 - 4 weeks old who have learnt to attach and feed well from the breast but think they should feed constantly. In this situation, the breast feeding mother and her nipples could do with some relief and possibly repair from constant sucking. It is however, important not to substitute a breast feed for a dummy soothe as this can reduce milk production resulting in an undernourished and unsettled baby

2. A baby sucking a dummy can reduce their tummy discomfort and pain until the cause of the pain and discomfort is diagnosed and relieved

3. Sucking a dummy can reduce the pain of oesophageal reflux allowing for a bit more sleep!

4. Recent knowledge indicates a baby sucking a dummy can reduce the incidence of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). This is thought to be due to a baby being in a more alert state of sleep and having their airways in a more open position allowing for better air entry. There are also other factors relating to the reduction of SIDS

5. Premature babies are given a dummy to encourage them suck when they are fed via a tube and to stimulate their suck before they are able to breast feed.

6. A baby who settles to sleep best with a sucking action. Commonly, a baby who is fed either breast milk or infant formula from a bottle requires a dummy to build up the length of sucking time required in a day.

Here are 5 reasons why a baby is disadvantaged using a dummy.

1. There is an increased risk of bacterial infections from dirty dummies. Sterilise them regularly and throw out any that have cracks or worn areas where bacteria can settle.

2. The continued use of a dummy after 3 - 4 months can set up strong sleep associations that can lead to unsettled sleep in the months that follow.

3. The regular and frequent use of a dummy has been shown to decrease the length of time a woman will continue to breast feed.

4. A young baby who sucks too often on a dummy can be too tired for nutritional breast feeding.

5. The use of a dummy after 9 months can not only disturb good sleep patterns but it can also interrupt speech development.

It can be difficult to know which dummy is best when there is a large variety on the market. Consider these 3 things which closely mimic a breast nipple.

1. Look for the dummy that is soft and supple. The brown latex rubber is usually the softest.

2. Choose a shape that is similar to a nipple, this is usually the round cherry or bulb shaped dummy.

3. It needs to be large enough to reach back into the back of the baby's mouth. This will depend on the size of baby.

With the above information in mind, I believe there is a place for a dummy in a baby's life providing that it is an appropriate dummy used at an appropriate time and only for the first 3 - 4 months of life when a baby's strong sucking reflex is present. After this they discover other ways to be soothed other than a dummy.

Breastfeeding Vs Bottle Feeding

Give your child the best.

Although most parents know that breast feeding is the best choice, but the
perceived inconvenience, previous attempts failure and lack of knowledge on the
actual advantages that breastmilk have caused many newborns to be denied benefiting
from breastfeeding.

In the beginning, it may be frustrating and may take some effort to get it started
right, but once the perserverance has passed the test, you are on your way to make
a big difference in you and your baby's life.

Breastfeeding creates a special bond between you and your baby. Every mother's milk
has a unique smell to a baby. This enhances bonding between the mother and baby. In
fact this is a great help to promote behavioural development of the baby. Bottle
feeding is merely providing food and even then, not necessarily the best food.
All the right kinds of fat in breastmilk comes in higher quantity but is more
easily absorbable than formula milk. These include Omega fatty acids, such as DHA
and AHA, which enhance your baby's brain and vision development when they needed
most.

Breastmilk contains more carbohydrates compared to formula milk to meet your baby's
needs.

Breastmilk contains less protein than formula milk, but this protein is of a form
that is more digestible for the sensitive stomach. All the protein from breastmilk
can be absorbed by your baby, unlike formula milk.

The proportion of the nutrients, vitamins and minerals in breastmilk changes with
the needs of your growing baby up to 6 months of age. Formula milk proportion stays
the same and are often less easily absorbable.

The amount of water in breast milk is just right to satisfy your baby's thirst,
thus, when you breastfeed your baby, you do not need to give water at all. The
proportion of water in formula milk is dependent on how much you put in.

There are more than a hundred ingredients in breastmilk that cannot be created with
human hands or brain. These are important for your baby's complete development.
The anitbodies in breastmilk help your baby fight against infection. These are
absent in formula milk. Bottle fed babies are more likely to suffer from diarrhea,
ear, lung and urine infections, increases anxiety and visits to the clinic.
The taste of breast milk varies according to the mother's diet while formula milk
taste the same all the time. Thus, breastfed babies are more ready to try new food
during weaning then bottle fed babies.

In the long run, breastfed babies are less likely to develop obesity, high blood
pressure and diabetes when they grow up.

The best part is the mother gets to return back to her pre-pregnant weight more
quickly because more calories are burnt when producing breast milk. Breast feeding
also protects the mother from breast cancer.

Celebrity Baby Bags

Celebrities are like a measuring stick of what is beautiful, spectacular, and high quality in life that we can dream about and hope that one day we can have. What did they wear at the Oscar's? What do their children wear? Where do they vacation? What jewelry, hand bags, and strollers did they take shopping with them today?

Celebrity baby bags have become a really hot item and the internet is just agog with covert snap shots of dinners out with Jessica and Cash or trips to Tokyo with Brad and Angie. Here is the scoop; rather than spending hours searching for what brand of diaper bag Rachel Ray adores or Julia Roberts relies on, just take a look at the one brand of baby bags they all seem to prefer; Storksak.

Angelina Jolie Baby Bags
Angelina Jolie is likely to become Forbes #1 super mom as well as the most influential celebrity. With six children, she has experience and you can bet that she chooses the diaper bag that is going to hold up to all her demands: 6 kids, 3 jobs, higher profile than even Oprah, and a Brad Pitt to help keep organized. This lovely lady has been seen all over the world with 2 of Storksak's diaper sack in particular; Gigi in Chocolate and Emily in Black. Gigi is sophisticated, elegant, and can even carry a laptop, important for this high powered blogger who maintains a finger on the pulse of human rights for women and children. Emily is a casual luxury bag that can hold plenty of baby things, necessary for her brood. They both have thermo-insulated bottle holders that keep baby's liquids hot or cold for up to 4 hours; essential for this super mom.

Jessica Alba Baby Bags
Jessica Alba has become a very popular Celebrity mom because of her sweetness and innocence in her delight with Honor. She and Angie have a lot in common: Storksak Emily and Gigi. She told Ellen DeGeneres on her talk show that she just loved her Emily diaper bag as well as Gigi so much, that she gave each member of the delighted audience one of the Storksak diaper bags. Recently, she and Cash have been seen sporting Storksak's Dora, a large, black patent with leather trim messenger bag with ample room for all of Mommy's, Daddy's and Baby's things including, of course, Storksak's signature thermo-insulated bottle holders and padded changing mat.

Brad Pitt Baby Bags
Who would not want to check out what Brad Pitt is carrying? Just a lovely man and a passionate father, Storksak's Jamie unisex messenger style diaper bag is almost better known as the Brad Pitt Diaper bag. He is such an accomplished father that he uses what he has learned from keeping 6 children clean and tidy. He freshens up, while on set, with baby wipes. The Storksak Brad Pitt diaper bag is an all leather, sophisticated, and beautifully crafted bag that unless Brad advertised that he was on parent duty with a diaper hanging out or one of the two external thermo-insulated bottle pockets unzipped, the onlooker would think that he was carrying a chic satchel in which he stuffed his papers and other manly things.

The Problem With Plastic

If you think that the recycling number embossed on the bottom of your plastics is the solution to the plastic problem, think again.  Of the seven types of plastic that are stamped as "recyclable" only two are easily and efficiently recycled.  Plastics are labeled with numbers 1 through 7.

Number 1 is pretty easy to recycle: Polyethylene terephthalate (PET or PETE). It is often clear, relatively lightweight (or thinner) and is used in:

  • Mouthwash containers

  • Soda bottles

  • Salad dressing containers

  • Plastic food jars

  • Water bottles

Number 2, also easy to recycle, is High density polyethylene (HDPE), is used in heavier containers like:

  • Milk jugs

  • Snack food containers

  • Laundry detergent containers

  • Shampoo bottles

  • Detergent bottles

Numbers 3 though 7 are where we run into problems.  If you havve tried to take any of these to your local recycling center you may have wondered why they won't take them. These plastics are difficult to recycle.

Number 3 - Polyvinyl chloride (V or Vinyl PVC),used to make:

  • Shower curtains

  • Cooking oil bottles

  • Pipe and Pipe fittings

  • Medical tubing

Number 4 - Low density polyethylene (LDPE), often colored, is used to make:

  • Sandwich, storage and "zipper" bags

  • Grocery and vegetable/meat bags

  • Plastic wrapping paper

  • Squeezable ketchup and mustard bottles

Number 5 - Polypropylene (PP), also often colored, is used for:

  • Tubs of butter, cookie dough, whipped topping

  • Tupperware containers

  • Yogurt and gelatin containers

  • Pancake and chocolate syrup bottles

Number 6 - Polystyrene (PS), is used in:

  • "To - Go"  food containers

  • Egg cartons

  • Disposable cups, bowls and plates

  • Styrofoam containers

  • Packing peanuts

Number 7 - Which includes a miscellany of all other plastics, which include:

  • Fast food beverage containers

  • Baby bottles

  • Cell phones

  • CDs

  • Electronics casings

  • Sports water bottles

Did you know that:

  • It takes 24 million gallons of oil  tomake a billion plastic bottles

  • 38 million plastic bottles in America end up in the land fills from bottled water alone

  • Plastic bottles take 700 years to begin composting

The plastic problem has no simple solution, but there are ways that the consumer can help.

  • Precycle:

This is the practice of considering your packaging before you buy. Make sure your plastic is number 1 or 2 before buying.  If it isn't, consider a different product choice.

  • Reuse & Repurpose:

If you must use plastic, find creative ways to reuse and repurpose it.  There is a wealth of information on this topic available on the Internet.

  • Always recycle.
